Chinese edition cnBeta told that local enthusiasts managed to hack Playstation 5and they are now using the console to mine cryptocurrency.
The key evidence of this rumor was a photograph that allegedly shows Ethereum mining at a speed of 99.76 megahashes per second with a consumption of 211 watts – this is more than the GeForce RTX 3080 with a result of 80 megahashes per second.
However, here the main doubts arose about the veracity of the rumor: the computing power of the PS5 graphics core is about 10 teraflops, which is very approximately equal to the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT. However, it only shows about 50 mega hashes per second.
The media suggest that after the hack, enthusiasts were able to overclock the console to high frequencies, and the thoughtful architecture of the console helped in achieving such a high result – however, so far, information about mining on the console should be treated very wary.
