“I’d like our studios to release more singles”: Phil Spencer talks about the future of Xbox Game Pass

Head of the gaming division of the company Microsoft Phil Spencer noted another big interview, this time with the resource Gamereactor… Among the topics for conversation were many important notes about the current policy of the team Xboxand what will happen to Xbox Series X buyers in the upcoming console generation.

Spencer, in particular, noted the ever-growing library Game pass… Dla Microsoft it is important to fill the service with a variety of projects, often giving preference to traditional story-driven development as opposed to service games

“It all depends on the studios themselves. I know people who analyzed the Game Pass model and confidently assumed that it was more like a service-oriented project. I disagree with this and have a completely opposite opinion.… The last thing I’d like to see in Game Pass is a situation where all subscribers are endlessly playing one single game. Then we will not have a service with games, but a subscription to one project, as is the case with World of Warcraft, do you understand?

Having games on the platform that have a clear beginning, middle and end is important. Here’s a look at the story adventure. I recently completed Dontnod’s Tell Me Why walkthrough myself – it’s a great game that surely complements our library. In a sense, such developments are even more preferable than one or two games that draw all the attention exclusively to themselves. We just need to have a good line of projects that attract users. We need to find a balance between single player adventures and multiplayer rides, and that’s what we’re working on.

Even more, I personally would like our in-house studios to release more singles, because in recent years our focus has organically shifted towards multiplayer“- explains the head of the Xbox team.

The next important point of the interview concerns the issues of content monetization on the Xbox platforms. Here Phil Spencer admits that the market leaves room for a wide variety of distribution options, accordingly, Microsoft will try to occupy all possible positions at once, offering the audience a maximum of choice

“We are not able to dictate a business model to all games in business today. But I will say this, in a healthy industry, a wide variety of product plans can find a place for themselves. Retail is an important part of the gaming culture, I myself like to buy games and want to so that the market develops further. But at the same time, we are seeing an increase in interest in Game Pass and the growing popularity of shareware projects. We still have a lot to develop, in the industry you can exist within the framework of a variety of models, but most importantly, they should remain as possible more – this is our strength.

With games from internal studios, let’s say I want to experiment a little. I don’t want it to turn out so that the whole industry remains tied to a single, ultimatum business model. If we really moved in this direction, then all games would be distributed as shareware, but as you can see, this is not happening. It is important to give players a choice – they have to decide for themselves how to pay and interact with games that pique their interest, “Phil Spencer concluded.

Launch of next generation consoles Xbox series x and Xbox series s will take place already 10th of November
