Soap opera, circus and wrestling in one bottle

In its modern form, it looks like a cross between a theatrical production, a soap opera and an acrobatic circus act. Every blow, word and even facial expressions of the fighters both in and out of the ring are carefully orchestrated. And even despite the sometimes fatal injury risk of wrestling, it has never been and never will be competitive.

A similar nature was invariably reflected in the games based on the motives, but the effect of it was ambiguous. On the one hand, you understood that everything that was happening was fake, because even with the included blood effects, the inherited pretense was quite obvious. On the other hand, in the WWE 2K virtual universe, wrestling is a real sport, and therefore the very competition appears in it. This, of course, is good, but it does not fit well with the real world. So we got simulators that simulate what does not exist in reality.

With WWE 2K Battlegrounds, there is no such dissonance of perception, because this is an arcade game with cartoon logic and physics. Here you can feed enemies to alligators, jump ten meters in height and blow up everything. And to be honest, this format – ridiculous, a bit childish, but entertaining at the same time – is much better suited to wrestling than the “simulators” from the main series. After all, wrestling itself is also ridiculous, a little childish and very entertaining!

WWE 2K Battlegrounds’ combat system may seem very simple, but in reality it still has depth. However, if you’re looking for a new esports discipline that will outshine Street Fighter, then look further. But if you want a game that the party guests can master in a couple of rounds, then you’re much closer to your goal.

Each hero in Battlegrounds has two kinds of punches and kicks, which correspond to exactly two combos – three punches and three kicks. Some of the fighters can still hit with a running start, but not all. You can avoid damage from all these attacks with a regular block, so you can’t rely on them too much. But this is probably correct, because wrestling is primarily a struggle.

One button is responsible for throws, however, the techniques themselves can change depending on the relative position of opponents. Some fighters can do them while running. You can counter them with the help of QTE – if, after capturing, you press the right button in time, your fighter will not only twist out, but also carry out a counterattack.

For real pros, there are super moves – both defensive and attacking. The former can temporarily increase protection or restore some health. Others include special throws and stamina strikes. Ultimates are the least likely to be activated – especially powerful and spectacular techniques that cannot be blocked.

To win, you need to either keep the opponent on the shoulder blades, or conduct a successful submission. This can be done at any time, however, if the fighter has a lot of health, it will be very easy for him to escape. Therefore, fights do not end quickly.

You can add variety to fights by taking out weapons from under the ring – branded folding chairs, toy hammers and even motorcycles. You can also climb onto the ring fence and effectively jump onto the enemy – or onto your tailbone if the opponent has time to dodge. In addition, there are special interactive objects in arenas – a radio-controlled goat, a hungry alligator, etc. They can also be used in battle.

Is WWE 2K Battlegrounds’ combat system striking? No, not even once. If it was a game for the phone, there would be no complaints. But for consoles and PCs, the gameplay is still simpler. The game was clearly created with an eye to local multiplayer and users who do not often pick up a gamepad. Therefore, if you do not have a noisy company and additional controllers at hand, this entertainment will get bored pretty quickly.

From courier to superstar in two nights

If you still intend to immerse yourself in the WWE 2K Battlegrounds world, then you should start with the campaign. It gradually introduces the player to all classes of fighters and modes, plus you can open additional cosmetic items, arenas or abilities in it.

The plot is as simple as three kopecks. Steve Stone Cold Austin begins a search for potential superstars – they will become the main characters. The story is told through comics, it mostly consists of small jokes and the prize for best storytelling is clearly not chasing.

In each chapter of the story campaign, we will fight for one of the newcomers: a courier from New York, an alligator fighter or crazy twins. At first, the battles will be elementary simple. However, in the end, at WrestleMania, the difficulty will increase dramatically. You may even have to replay one or two matches.

As the campaign progresses, you will encounter all the modes available in the game. First of all, these are one-on-one and two-on-two fights (with a change of fighters or the simultaneous entry of all into the ring). There are also “every man for himself” matches and fights in which you need to get out of the cage after collecting the scattered money.

In addition to the modes, the plot will introduce users to the classes of fighters. The style of play and most of the available techniques depend on them. Some wrestlers are very fast and can perform many moves in flight using ring corners and fencing. Others, on the contrary, are slow, but they are capable of scattering all opponents around the ring with one blow.

The differences between the classes will be easy to understand – they are very visual. However, unfortunately, within these classes, fighters are almost the same. Yes, some of them have some unique tricks for which a trademark is probably registered. But in the overwhelming majority of cases, the characters have the same techniques, and the general behavior in the ring is practically the same. Therefore, the diversity of the roster of fighters is here rather for show.

Drama, bugs and donations – everything we love so much

The arcade nature of WWE 2K Battlegrounds is great. The cartoony and comic are very well suited to wrestling. However, because of this, he lost his melodrama. Above, I mentioned that in this type of entertainment there is a lot of “soap operas” – scandals, intrigues and betrayals here, no less than in the Brazilian TV series. There was no place for this in the new game, which means that there were no fights in the locker rooms, pre-fight insults and other theatricality.

Perhaps all this is a matter of personal preference, so here’s a more objective reason for criticism: the technical execution of the game is severely lame. Everything is not as bad as it was in WWE 2K20: bugs with animations are not very critical, but occasional freezes, during which the game produces about half a frame per second, are very annoying here.

The list of disadvantages can easily include the microtransaction system. You can buy almost everything here – from cosmetic items to fighters and enhancement of abilities. Most of the roster is initially unavailable, and in order to unlock all the wrestlers, you will have to either grind a lot or donate a lot. In this way, the title resembles a shareware mobile game, although it is not.

By the way, about this: WWE 2K Battlegrounds has a strange situation with the price. The standard US price tag has been lowered to $ 40, which perhaps explains its modest gameplay and a bunch of donation mechanics. And in the PlayStation Store in Russia, it also costs less than usual – 2.3 thousand rubles. But on Steam, the regional price tag was formed strangely – 2 thousand rubles. This is usually how much they ask for full AAA titles.
