Gamers have long been accustomed to the fantasy setting in video games. Titles, in which elves and dwarves once again fight goblins and orcs, come out with enviable regularity – it seems, since the very appearance of games with graphics. It is all the more interesting to look at some completely different atmosphere – for example, the Slavic flavor in games. Developers do not so often delight gamers with ancient Russian motives and pagan gods, which still did not prevent us from compiling a selection of worthy representatives in several genres – more and more often these are strategies or role-playing games.

Series “Prince”

Finding a cover in good quality, alas, is extremely problematic

A cult series of role-playing games in narrow circles, the creators of which were inspired by the aesthetics of Russia in the 7th century. True, there is no question of any historicity here: despite the presence of the Varangians, Byzantines and Slavs, the events of the “Princes” unfold in their own universe, called the “Chronicles of Times”. The entourage, however, is immediately recognizable: wooden huts, monsters like brownies and goblin. The bonus is the management of your own village (or even several), the collection of tribute and three storylines in the original for the three sides of the local conflict. In the sequel, the hero of the first game will have to resist, and the number of characters available for selection will grow to six. About the third, alas, even the most devoted fans of the series prefer not to remember.

Historical strategy about the famous battles of Alexander Nevsky. Domestic developers diligently copied the approach of global strategies from the Total War series, so thousands of units converge on the battlefield – however, for some reason, the authors did not provide a global mode. The battles are connected with each other in almost no way, but you can try your hand at the battle on the Neva, and in the legendary Battle of the Ice. The game, by the way, gives a good idea of why Nevsky was a brilliant commander: most battles are really difficult, and it is almost impossible to win without repeating real tactics – largely due to a strong numerical superiority. If the proposed eight missions seem a little, you can pay attention to the “XIII century: Glory or death” and the addition to it “XIII century: Rusich” from the same developers in which other conflicts and sides are proposed. There are, however, not only Slavs, but there are about four dozen missions.

“Zlatogorye”

The original, of course, was not kind to time …

And again, the role-playing game, released on the wave of popularity of “Prince”. However, unlike the ideological mastermind, “Zlatogorye” was turn-based, in the spirit of the same Fallout. The first part turned out to be not the brightest adventure in the world of Slavic mythology and was remembered only by average quality dialogues and a bunch of bugs, because of which it was almost unplayable. But in the sequel, the developers did some shameful work on the mistakes: the picture looks good today, the quest system has expanded greatly, and the dialogues have grown decently in quality. In addition, it became possible to solve incoming problems in several different ways, so that there was an incentive to re-pass. Those for whom the second part will not be enough can be offered to pay attention to the “Cold Skies” add-on, which is not inferior in quality to the main game and corrects a number of problems of the original such as the imbalance of the starting classes.

Global strategy in the spirit of Europa Universalis or Crusader Kings, but with a Russian flavor. The focus is on Russia in the XIV-XVII centuries, which is going through difficult times. A plague has come from Asia, external enemies haunt you, and internal fragmentation only adds fuel to the fire. Unlike the “older” brothers, “Empire” offers a smaller scale, remaining a global strategy: here you have to establish the life of individual villages, monitor the movement of plague patients, personally control the hiring of subjects and develop science and the nascent industry. And ideally – to lead your principality (one of more than two dozen) to power over the entire European part of Russia, seizing at the same time the lands of Lithuania and Poland. The game is simpler and faster than Europa Universalis, which makes it a good entry point into the genre.

“Mascot”

Native architecture with gilded domes in stock

Another RPG set in a world inspired by Slavic mythology. The player takes on the role of one of the four heroes who managed to survive the disappearance of Kiyazh, the capital city. What exactly happened and who is to blame for the catastrophe will have to be figured out in the course of not the shortest campaign. The developers were betting on several not the most obvious things in the gameplay, including a complex physical model of magic and the ability to disassemble any building on a log, as well as an “Orthodox” design, borrowed from ancient scriptures upon request. In general, this, of course, is not the most successful clone of Diablo, which is pretty much saved by the fresh and atypical atmosphere of Slavic fantasy.
