HBO's Lovecraft Country shut down after season one

Channel HBO decided not to renew the fantastic series “Lovecraft Country” for the second season, despite rather high ratings.
The story told about the journey of a young Atticus, his uncle and childhood friend in the States of the 1950s, full of various secrets and dangers. Among the latter were not only aggressive people, but also the most real monsters.
The first episode of the project became the most successful of the new original series HBO Max, having collected 1.5 million viewers, and the final episode attracted more than 10 million people to the screens.
The reason for the closure, apparently, was not the ratings, but the absence of a further literary source. The first season was based on the novel of the same name, on the basis of which the script plan was built.
The authors had ideas for a sequel, however, perhaps the level of thoughtfulness of the subsequent story did not satisfy HBO, which often prefers miniseries to long-running projects.
