Great helper: HUAWEI WATCH GT2 Pro smartwatch review

Wristwatches were invented long before the arrival of mobile phones and were, in fact, one of the first gadgets. Over time, they simply turned into a beautiful accessory for many, and more expensive models from premium materials began to emphasize the high status of the owner.

Smart watches and fitness bracelets began to be produced only about seven years ago. Today they are becoming more and more popular and are found all the time – even among people who do not play sports. The most expensive models are presented on the market through the efforts of just a few companies, and they usually ask for from 30 thousand to several million rubles. If you are looking for a watch made of quality materials with a strict premium design and a cost of no more than 20 thousand rubles, you may need to pay attention to the new product from HUAWEI – model WATCH GT2 Pro… The official price for this device starts from 20 thousand rubles. We have used such a watch every day for two months and today we are ready to tell you about it.

PRICES AND PACKAGING

In Russia, the WATCH GT2 Pro is available in two colors: misty gray with a gray-brown leather strap and night black with a black fluoroelastomer strap. The official price is 19,990 rubles with a fluoroelastomer strap and 22,990 with a leather strap. We received a test sample in black, which is positioned as a sports version.

The watch is delivered in a black dense square box. On the front you will find the logo and product name shimmering in gold, as well as the image of WATCH GT2 Pro in the color of your choice.

After removing the cover, you will immediately see a watch with a strap in a special recess. Below are the compartments with accessories, namely wireless charging with a USB Type-C connector and a USB Type-C to USB Type-A charging cable. Also inside you are waiting for a guarantee and instructions.

APPEARANCE

At the first glance at the watch, you realize that you have a high-quality gadget in front of you. They look very strict and solid, even though we have a sports variation, not a classic one. Materials, pleasant to the touch, high build quality. And this is not surprising, since the main body is made of light titanium alloy, as are the two function buttons on the right side.

A sapphire crystal is responsible for protecting the screen, which is very resistant to wear and tear. When putting on the watch for the first time, you can feel the pleasant glossy texture of the back panel, which is made of ceramic. A sapphire crystal is also used in the middle of the panel below to protect the sensors. The material is easily soiled, but since it adheres to the skin, it is practically invisible when worn. The strap, as mentioned earlier, is made from fluoroelastomer. It is based on a polymer containing fluorine, which has excellent resistance to high temperatures, moisture, chemicals, and various climatic factors. The strap is really very high quality and durable enough. HUAWEI WATCH GT is embossed on one of its halves. The clasp is metal, also with the HUAWEI logo. The fastening width is 22 mm, so if you wish, you can buy any other strap of this width for a wristwatch, or change it to something else.

The dimensions of the watch without a strap are 46.7 x 46.7 x 11.4 mm. Weight – 52 g without strap. The WATCH GT2 Pro is light enough for both male and female hands. At the same time, they look large on female thin hands, so this is more of a male version of the watch. Although if you are a fitny with big hands, then perhaps they will suit you too.

WEAR RESISTANCE

As I mentioned above, the test piece was worn on the arm every day for two months. During this time, the watch was repeatedly exposed to a variety of influences.

First of all, I would like to mention their excellent shock resistance. Several times I accidentally dropped them on the parquet, and they also occasionally got it if I touched something with the hand on which they hung. I also cooked, washed dishes and constantly took a shower with a watch on my hand, but during the operation, not a single visible damage appeared on it. No scratches, no scuffs, no other defects. Except that dirt and fingerprints sit on the sapphire crystal and ceramic panel, but it is enough to wash and wipe them, and they will be as if they were out of the box.

The same goes for the strap, which also looks like new and has not received any damage during use. The durability of the WATCH GT2 Pro is truly amazing.

SCREEN AND CUSTOMIZATION

The watch has a round-shaped screen with a 1.39-inch AMOLED matrix with a resolution of 454×454 pixels. He has no dead zones.

Thanks to the built-in light sensor, the screen can automatically adjust the brightness depending on the level of light around. He copes with this task with a bang. At night, it will not blind you if you suddenly wake up and decide to look at the time, and during the day in the sun you can see everything without any problems – you don’t even have to cover it with your hand. Also, the watch has the functions of “turn on when you raise your hand” and “active screen”. In the first case, the watch turns on when you raise your hand – the response is generally good. The second function allows you to leave the screen on for a longer time (from 5 to 20 minutes) when activated.

A nice feature of WATCH GT2 Pro is the ability to change the design of the dial in just a couple of seconds. By default, the watch comes with 12 dial options out of the box, which have both analog design options and digital ones. You can quickly switch them by holding your finger on the home screen for a few seconds. Some watch faces have the ability to customize, for example, display information from the desired sensors or time in a different time zone. In addition to the pre-installed watchfaces, you can find and download about 150 more watch faces through the HUAWEI Health app.

FUNCTIONALITY

To fully use the watch, you need a phone with Android 5.0 or iOS 9.0 or higher, as well as install and register in the aforementioned “Health” application (HUAWEI Health). Thanks to the latter, you can not only download new watchfaces and update the firmware, but also study the information in more detail with various monitoring sensors and activate constant monitoring of some functions built into the watch, as well as transfer music to the built-in memory, manage alarms, notifications and drop favorite contacts for calls from the clock.

The WATCH GT2 Pro’s Bluetooth connection ensures that you can answer calls and make calls to your favorite contacts added to the memory right from the watch. This is convenient enough if you left your phone in another room or have dirty hands, but need to answer a call or quickly dial someone.

You can also connect a headset to the watch, but you can only use it to listen to music from the internal memory. You can talk on the clock only through the speakerphone, so in crowded places you are unlikely to use this function, since everyone around will hear your conversation.

Of the declared 4 gigabytes of internal memory on the watch, only 2185 megabytes are available for downloading music. Technically, you can listen to songs using the built-in speaker or via Bluetooth headphones, but the sound quality is poor in both cases. There are wheezing and crackling sounds in wireless headphones, and there is only one speaker in the watch, and it is not quite suitable for music. At the same time, it is convenient to simply control the music from the watch, which I used daily on the way to work and back home. For example, you can pause, switch tracks and adjust the volume (here it is worth noting that volume control is possible not only using the slider on the screen, but also using the side buttons on the watch, which temporarily receive the functionality of the volume rocker). In the menu, to go back, you just need to swipe across the screen from left to right.

For navigation in the watch, not only a touch screen is available, but also two buttons on the right side. The top one is responsible for going to the main menu and returning to the main screen. The lower one is used to quickly jump to the desired function. By default, when you click, you will be taken to the training section, but the developers allow you to customize whatever your heart desires. I personally set up quick access to the music section, since most often I use the watch’s music control running on my smartphone.

Simple swipes on the home screen allow you to quickly jump to the desired functions. If you swipe from top to bottom, then you will open the shutter with quick commands: “Do not disturb” mode, “On screen” function, phone search, alarm clock and settings. It also displays icons for Bluetooth, GPS, charging and the date with the day of the week. Swiping up from the bottom of the screen will take you to the messages menu, which displays the last unread text messages from your phone, as well as notifications from various applications. Swiping from right to left or vice versa will allow you to quickly get to several sections: heart rate, stress, weather, music, activity.

The watch offers tracking of about a hundred different workouts, from banal walking and running to various martial arts, auto racing, rock climbing, curling and parachuting. Since the author of these lines is always busy and lazy, it was possible to test the functionality only in the “Walking on the street” mode, since I usually move at a brisk pace.

The watch itself suggests activating this workout after 5-10 minutes with constant fast movement. This is due to the fact that the WATCH GT2 Pro does not understand if you are indoors or outdoors, and when they detect that you seem to be exercising, they vibrate and display two options to choose from to activate the recording of the training. Moreover, they pre-record the data for several minutes until they notify you of activation.

If you ignore the offer, then as you continue to be active, the watch will remind you of itself by vibration every few minutes. When the function is activated, a male voice from the speaker in English will tell you about the start of the workout. He will also contact you when you decide to pause or end your workout.

One of the amusing features of the WATCH GT2 Pro is TrueSleep. The watch not only tracks the time of your sleep, but also its quality, as well as the level in different phases. This is especially important for active people, since healthy sleep directly affects the well-being and general condition during the day. With a built-in blood oxygen saturation sensor and heart rate tracking, this feature evaluates deep, light, REM sleep and wake-up phases. A detailed graph is formed in the Health app (Huawei Health), where you can further get various tips to improve the quality of sleep.

Like many other modern wearable gadgets, WATCH GT2 Pro as a whole has a fairly wide range of different sensors for tracking health. Thanks to them, you can determine not only the pulse, but also stress, as well as the level of blood oxygen saturation. Moreover, all these functions can be configured for constant tracking through the application.

By the way, initially the watch did not support continuous monitoring of SpO2 – such a function was added by the firmware about a month after the release of WATCH GT2 Pro. Then I had to wait until the application was updated directly to enable the option on the watch – it took another 1-2 weeks.

Speaking of other useful features of the watch, it is worth mentioning that they received a barometer for tracking atmospheric pressure (especially useful for weather-dependent people) and a compass, which is useful for those who like to go mushrooming in the forest. There is also an option to control the camera remotely – very convenient if you want to install a phone somewhere and take a picture with the whole company directly by clicking on the watch screen. There is a timer for 2 and 5 seconds.

The watch also has all the standard apps like stopwatch, timer and alarm.

BATTERY AND AUTONOMY

The WATCH GT2 Pro has a 455 mAh battery. According to the manufacturer, this watch can live on a single charge up to 14 days. And indeed it is.

Over the course of two months, I fully charged the watch about five times and on average it lasted 12-14 days of use with the constant activation of the heart rate and stress measurement function. Sometimes the workout “Walking on the street” was included, every day I also controlled music from my smartphone and periodically received calls. They also tracked sleep almost every night.

After the introduction of the function of constant monitoring of SpO2, their autonomy decreased by about a couple of days. In general, with more moderate use, they can live more than 14 days.

A full charge from the complete wireless solution takes about 3 hours. The watch also charges perfectly with the reversible wireless charging built into the phone. I checked this function using the 2018 flagship from HUAWEI – Mate 20 Pro – which I personally use.

TOTAL

HUAWEI WATCH GT2 Pro is a wonderful gadget with an attractive, austere design, excellent durability and excellent battery life. And all this for a fairly affordable price compared to similar models from competitors. For sports enthusiasts, this is a versatile device with the largest library of trackable workouts. For ordinary people, this is a beautiful gadget that looks good and has a number of useful features that will always be with you – just raise your hand.
