“Good Movie for an Evening”: Review of the Oxygen from Netflix

The French have a recognizable handwriting in cinematography, especially when it comes to auteur cinema. Even so, one might wonder how they can create truly breathtaking projects with a minimum of funds. Producer Alexander Azha, more remembered for the strange mystical thriller “The ninth life of Louis Drax”, Offers a very intimate sci-fi story about a girl who wakes up from a cryo-sleep. Locked in an isolated capsule, the heroine tries to restore memory gaps using scarce means of communication and, as the plot develops, she learns with the viewer her intricate and dramatic story.

The fact that there is only 90 minutes of oxygen left in the chamber, and the timer is slowly decreasing, bringing the cruel outcome closer, makes the picture especially poignant. Melanie Laurent, who plays the main role, does an excellent job with the solo performance entrusted to her shoulders, offering the viewer an emotional game.

Built on the principle of nowadays fashionable screencasts, the story gets by with only small fragments of additional video or audio inserts, concentrating the viewer’s attention on the main character.

IN “Oxygen”Given its sci-fi aspect, there are almost no graphics or effects, but fantastic cinematography from Maxim Alexandra… And oddly enough, but thanks to the claustrophobic effect, there really is a feeling of empathy for the heroine Melanie Laurent, despite the disclosure of more and more new fragments of this story. However, such viewing pleasure is probably due to the effect of unpredictability. Unfortunately, when you re-enter, the magic of surprise is lost, so watching “Oxygen” becomes just interesting.

Taking into account the factors already outlined, we can say that Oxygen is in its own way an innovative cinema with quite serious topics for discussion, ranging from who can be considered a person, and ending with the structure of modern society and its dependence on technical solutions.

The definition of “good one night movie” fits Oxygen perfectly, and you can test it yourself.
