Gabe Newell is stuck in New Zealand. Since March, he has been unable to leave the country due to the coronavirus pandemic, although he doesn’t seem to care much. Newell spoke on local television today where he announced a free concert in the morning program.
In gratitude for the hospitality, Gabe took over the responsibility of organizing a two-part entertainment show, We Love Aotearoa.
According to the CEO Valve, “The hardest [в нахождении в Новой Зеландии] – concern for friends and family who are not here. ” And the situation in the country is “very different” than in the United States, Newell says.
“When I talk to people from Seattle, I see a strange and difficult picture. They are deeply isolated, unable to go outside and look at nature, which New Zealand has provided to its residents and guests of the country like us. “
After finishing work on Half-Life: Alyx in March, Newell, along with two of his friends – Spanish racer Alex Riberas and his girlfriend Tegan Klein – took a short break to visit New Zealand.
Around the same time, the country’s authorities introduced a ban on the movement of people abroad. As a result, due to COVID, tourists could not return home, although they do not regret it at all.
“Our vacation was supposed to last ten days,” says Klein. “However, a global pandemic started and we had 48 hours to make a decision before New Zealand closed its borders and we decided to stay.”
Organized by Newell, Riberas, Klein and others, the event will take place in Auckland on August 15th. It will be a full-scale concert with live music, VR booths and a variety of snacks. During the day, residents will find a family program for all ages, and in the evening the degree will rise to 18+.
The program prepared by the organizers can be found on the official website of the event.
