Experts: PlayStation 5 will become the most environmentally friendly next-generation console

As part of a new initiative Console Carbon Footprint (literally “the carbon footprint left by the consoles”) 21 gaming companies promised to reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere by more than 30 million tons by 2030. The new union promises to reduce the production of plastic packaging, which will entail the first decisive steps in the fight against climate change.

Physical copies versus digital releases

According to studies, 91% of the 8.3 billion cubic meters of plastic produced are not recycled. If current trends continue, then by 2050 12 billion tons of plastic will be dumped.

Not least of all in its accumulation are video games. Comparing the costs of producing materials for physical copies and the electricity used to download digital ones, experts note in the second case a 23-fold decrease in CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

Ecology of popular games

If we consider the most popular games for the last year, it turns out that FIFA 19 is responsible for the emission of more than 900 thousand kg of CO2 into the atmosphere (taking into account physical and digital copies).

Looking at the sales of games in plastic packages, experts noted that 128,479 kg of plastic could go to landfill if the owners of FIFA 19 decided to get rid of their game discs after buying FIFA 20.

Console Impact

According to research, the original PlayStation 3 is the least environmentally friendly console.

Nintendo devices with an average carbon emission of 0.008 kg / h have proven their best.

Xbox systems are the worst choice for the environment, with an average emission level of 0.031 kg / h.

Among the upcoming premieres, experts noted the PlayStation 5

The power consumption of consoles largely depends on their graphics subsystem. Based on this, we can say that the PS5 runs the risk of becoming the most environmentally friendly console in the lineup since PS Classic.

According to experts, the new platform from Sony will produce 68.6% less carbon than the Xbox Series X. The PS5 performance / watt ratio is 1.5, thanks to the GPU installed in it.

Sony’s new iron will produce 0.022 kg CO2 per hour, while the Xbox Series X will produce 0.07 kg / h over the same time period due to the larger graphics chip installed in it.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X are slated for Christmas 2023.
