Dream job turned into routine – Mass Effect lead screenwriter talks about changes to BioWare

Veteran BioWare Drew Karpyshyn now works in Archetype entertainment – a new studio, created by with the support of the company Wizards of the coast. Its founder was a former employee Bioware James olen (Neverwinter nights, Baldur’s gate, Knights of the old republic, Mass effect) The team’s first project will be a multi-platform RPG, the action of which will unfold in a sci-fi setting. Now the studio is actively recruiting new employees. Karpishin in the role of one of the leading scriptwriters is called upon to help build the main universe for the game and lead the work of writing its plot.

In his own blog he posted record, where he shared his thoughts on the Archetype team, and also talked about the reasons for leaving BioWare. Below are some of his quotes:

“Luckily for me, I got another offer. I am proud to announce that from now on I work as the lead screenwriter at Archetype Entertainment. Archetype is a new development team created under the wing of Wizards of the Coast and founded by creative genius James Olen, who is responsible for BioWare hits such as Baldur’s Gate, KOTOR and Dragon Age. I haven’t been very, very long since excited to be working on a project. (Note: I always liked working with WotC; they even published my first novel!) “

“I’ve been working in the gaming industry for twenty years. When I started at BioWare, everything was fresh and fun. It was a dream job – talented people worked together to create epic games like Baldur’s Gate, KOTOR, Mass Effect and Dragon Age. But as we grew older and more successful, times changed, we became more structured. It was much more difficult for us to do what we liked, and the teams were forced to create games based on market research, and not our creative impulses and hobbies. “My dream job turned into a simple job, and I lost the enthusiasm and inspiration that I once had.”

“But at Archetype, my passion was revived again. The sensation of being in the studio reminds me of the first days I worked at BioWare; I can feel the magic floating in the air. And even though I can’t go too deep into the specifics of what we are working on, we’ve already caused a stir in the industry. “

After working on games like Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and two first parts Mass effect, Karpishin left BioWare in 2012 and then returned again in 2015, where he worked on Anthem until his next departure in 2018.

Archetype Entertainment’s debut project has no release dates yet.
