Brutal Cosmos: Schreier talks about how Take-Two Interactive ruined the Kerbal Space Program 2 development team

Journalist Jason schreier published its first major material for the portal Bloomberg. And it is devoted to the controversial methods of the company Take-Two Interactive.

As you know, under a subsidiary brand Private division should go on a continuation of an exciting sandbox about the construction of space rockets Kerbal Space Program. The original game was developed by a Mexican studio Squad.

The main field of activity of this company is the creation of multimedia projects commissioned by large companies. Kerbal Space Program was the brainchild of one of the employees of Squad Felipe Phalangewhich was supported by management. After the Phalange switched to other projects, the rights to the game were sold to Take-Two Interactive.

Studio was chosen as the sequel developer Star Theory Games (formerly known as Uber entertainmentcreated Planetary annihilation and Monday Night Combat) And it was about her that Schreyer decided to tell.

The development of the project went on as of 2017, but in December 2019 problems began. The fact is that the Take-Two Interactive leadership decided to make a strange maneuver: the project was taken away from Star Theory Game, and invitations were sent to employees to switch to work in a new studio Intercept gameswhere they will be able to receive generous compensation.

It turned out that the founders of Star Theory Game were negotiating the sale of Take-Two Interactive, but the parties could not agree on the terms. Sensing a threat, the publisher began to act quickly and decisively. As a former member of the development team said Patrick Mead, at the new place of work, employees will lose the opportunity to take a project development course, as well as part of the financial benefits if successful.

As Kerbal Space Program 2 was the main project of Star Theory Game, most of the employees accepted the proposal, including the head of the studio Jeremy Ebles and leading developers. The remaining team members spent several months creating a prototype of the new game.

They hoped that at the exhibition GDC 2023 other publishers and investors may be interested, but the event was canceled due to a pandemic. This was a blow not only to Star Theory Games, but also to other indie developers, some of whom literally spent the last money on participating in the exhibition.

As a result, in March 2023, the studio was closed. According to recent statements, the release of Kerbal Space Program 2 was postponed to 2023 due to the difficult sanitary and epidemiological situation in the world.

According to a company analyst Cowen & co Dag Kreutz, this story could damage Take-Two Interactive’s reputation and influence negotiations with other studios.
