Beautiful entertainment tool: ViewSonic XG270QG gaming monitor review

At the end of 2019, the company ViewSoniс introduced a gaming monitor XG270QG with Nano IPS QHD matrix and NVIDIA G-SYNC support. Recently, our editorial staff received this model for testing and today is ready to share their impressions.

PACKAGING, APPEARANCE AND CONNECTORS

The monitor comes in a fairly capacious box made of thick cardboard. It is made predominantly in black, and on the sides it is highlighted in blue.
Inside you will find such a kit, packed in protective foam: a monitor panel, two parts of the leg, two side visors, a power supply, two network cables (European and Asian), an HDMI cable, a DisplayPort cable, a USB 3.0 Type-B cable, a user manual and warranty card.

Like the entire ELITE series, this panel has a discreet appearance. Prior to reviewing the ViewSonic XG279QG, we looked at a wide range of gaming monitors from various companies. Based on modern requirements, they are united by a common design feature – all legs are very similar and consist of two parts. The XG270QG’s stand is no exception.

The XG270QG upside-down T leg stand combines powder-coated black metal most of the surface with a matte black metal inlay on the front with ELITE lettering in the corner.

The construction of the base of the leg is smooth and made of high quality black plastic.

On top of the base, above the elevator for adjusting the screen in height, there is a convenient handle that allows you to easily lift the monitor and move it to the desired location.

After assembly, the leg is easily attached to the screen from the back using a snap-on mechanism and is just as easy to dismantle if necessary. However, the monitor can also be wall-mounted using the appropriate VESA 100 x 100 brackets.

The base of the stand creates solid support, the stand provides good ergonomic flexibility with smooth adjustments: tilt -5 ° away from you and 20 ° towards you; height adjustment within 120 mm; rotate 45 ° to the left and 45 ° to the right and rotate in portrait mode 90 ° clockwise or counterclockwise. At the lowest height, the screen has a distance to the table surface of about 90 mm.

The top and sides of the monitor have a very thin bezel that is flush with the display itself, and the bottom is traditionally thicker – its width is about 25 mm. It also sticks out about 5 mm from the display. In the middle, you will find the ELITE logo, and on the right corner, a small monitor power LED that glows blue when the monitor is on and amber when it goes into a low power state.

The thickness of the screen at the edges is 21.5 mm, which is not that much for such solutions. The back is made in a rounded shape of black matte plastic, and it becomes wider in the area of attachment to the leg.

The total depth of the monitor including the stand is approximately 265mm. Screen 40 mm behind the front edge of the stand base. Weight with stand -7.7 kg.

In the kit, as already mentioned, there are two visors, which can optionally be attached to the sides of the panel. Their main purpose is to prevent screen glare, which interferes with the operation of the monitor, for example, if you are sitting in a sunny weather with your back to the window. You can attach them using a Phillips screwdriver. After installation, the angle of the visor is allowed to adjust. If this is not to your taste, then the kit also contains plastic plugs for holes for these visors.

The OSD menu is controlled by the central joystick located below the “ELITE” logo on the bottom edge of the monitor panel. To the left of the joystick there is a shortcut button for the blue filter mode. On the right is the power on / off button.

The ELITE RGB backlight feature includes a hexagonal RGB LED ring on the back and 10 RGB LEDs on the bottom of the monitor. These functions can be controlled through the OSD menu.

There is a headphone mount on the left side, and there are two rubber stoppers on the bottom that will help you organize good cable management when using the built-in USB hub.

Downward facing connectors include: one DisplayPort version 1.2a; HDMI version 1.4; 3.5 mm headphone jack, 3 USB 3.0 ports (plus USB Type-B input for connecting a USB hub) and a connector for an external power supply. In addition, the XG270QG has two built-in speakers of 2W each. The sound quality of this solution does not differ from similar analogs.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND SETTINGS

This 27-inch gaming monitor uses LG Display’s 10-bit (8-bit + FRC) Nano IPS panel with 165 Hz refresh rate and QHD resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels). The “Nano” designation for an IPS panel refers to an enhanced phosphor coating used to enrich the color gamut. The response time of this panel from gray to gray is 1 ms, the average is about 5 ms.

The model supports 100% sRGB color space and about 90% Adobe RGB. A WLED panel is used to illuminate the matrix. The brightness is 350 cd / m2, which is why there is no support even for the basic DisplayHDR400. Static contrast is 1000: 1 and dynamic is 120,000,000: 1. Viewing angles for this panel are fairly standard and are 178 degrees horizontally and vertically. The XG270QG also supports NVIDIA G-SYNC technology.

As mentioned above, to access the OSD menu, you need to use the joystick in the middle of the bottom of the screen. A menu will appear, in which the top indicates information about the enabled game mode, the maximum available frame rate and activation of G-SYNC.

In the first tab, you will find a variety of game modes – both standard for FPS and MOBA, and custom profiles, as well as completely non-game modes – for surfing the Internet and watching movies.

The next tab “Displays” provides settings for contrast, brightness and other color characteristics of the screen. Further you will find only switching between video inputs of this monitor.

The fourth tab is responsible for adjusting the volume and enabling the mute function. Well, in the last section, you can not only customize the menu itself, but also control the backlight, configure the shortcut button (to the left of the joystick) and turn on the on-screen sight.

TESTS AND GAMES

We were able to test the monitor on PC, Xbox One X and PS4 Pro in projects such as Forza Horizon 4 (PC), Ghost of Tsushima (PS4), The Last of Us Part II (PS4), Forza Motorsport 7 (XONE), Red Dead Redemption 2 (XONE) and Nier Automata (XONE).

Despite the monitor resolution (QHD; 2560 by 1440), the PS4 Pro did not allow a value higher than Full HD, which made the picture slightly fuzzy.

When using the monitor in conjunction with the Xbox One X, you can set the resolution to 2K, which results in a sharper picture. On a PC, this monitor felt best and was able to show a very smooth and beautiful picture.

This panel has very good viewing angles, the colors remain the same as when looking directly at the screen, and for this, thanks to the 2019 IPS-matrix. An unpleasant moment was the glare, which is inherent in all LED-backlit screens.

During testing, we found small flares from the bottom and top on the right side and one from the bottom left. Unfortunately, the camera cannot convey the accuracy of the illumination, but in reality they are less than in the photo. In games and when watching movies at 21: 9, they are definitely noticeable.

As for performance, the monitor is capable of delivering the declared refresh rate of 165 Hz only via DisplayPort, but via HDMI you will have to be content with only 60 hertz. This means that you will not be able to enable 2K / 120 frames mode on the Xbox.

RESULTS

The ViewSoniс XG270QG is a very beautiful monitor that I think will look good not only in a gaming den, but also in the office. Its austere look and good performance really make it a good entertainment tool. It is ideal for PC games, but not for consoles. Well, against the background of the release of a new generation of systems, buying a monitor with QHD resolution and HDMI 1.4 is not the most expedient option, so you cannot call it an ultimatum. If you don’t play on consoles, then you should take a look at this model.
