BBC named ‘Luther’ protagonist as insufficiently authentic black

Head of Diversification BBC Miranda Wayland stated that the hero of Idris Elba from the series Luther not authentic enough black.

According to Wayland, John Luther doesn’t seem authentic because he doesn’t have black friends and because he doesn’t eat Caribbean food.

“It’s great when there are such big iconic shows with these key characters, but the point is that everything around them, their environment, their culture, the scenery is absolutely reflective. A lot of it will be about how we can make sure this show is authentic in terms of storytelling, ”Wayland said, explaining the BBC’s strategy for diversity and inclusion.

The network criticized Wayland’s statement, accusing her of imposing stereotypes.
