In addition, there were images of the planet Arrakis, whose role in the film was played by the United Arab Emirates. Timothy Chalame most remembered the darkness. In the summer of 2019, the actor says, the film crew went deep into the sandstone and granite canyons of the southern part of the Jordan, leaving the actors in the middle of the night to catch the dawn on camera. Light spilling over the abyss gave the landscape an otherworldly appearance.
“It was really surreal,” says Chalamet. “Such landscapes of Goliath, you can imagine on any planet in our universe, but not on Earth.”
Due to the endless sandy seas that gave the picture its name, production has moved to remote areas outside Abu Dhabi, where the temperature competed with the fictional story Frank Herbert.
“I remember leaving my room at 2 a.m. and it was probably 100 degrees outside,” says Chalamet.
During the filming, he and other actors had to wear thin rubber armor that retains moisture, literally collecting tiny droplets exhaled through the nose.

The director of the picture, Denis Villeneuve, recalled that the story he told would consist of two films, since a lot of footage had accumulated.
“I would not agree to make the adaptation of the book one film,” says Villeneuve. “The world is too complicated. This is exactly the world whose strength is in the details. ”
The director slightly changed Baron Harkonnen. The last in the film will appear to the audience not so much crazy as a predator. Villeneuve wanted to make the character less caricature, so he invited Stellan Skarsgård.
“Stellan has something in his eyes. You feel that he thinks of something, thinks, thinks – he is tense and makes calculations deep inside, which is visible in the eyes. I can swear it can be pretty scary. ”

In addition, Villeneuve changed the image of Dr. Liet Kines, a leading environmentalist Arrakis and an independent intermediary between the warring factions. In previous works, he was always portrayed as a white man, and in the new film adaptation, his role is played by a dark-skinned actress Sharon Duncan-Brewster.
“Denis told me that there were not enough female characters in his cast, and he always wanted to give this role to a woman,” says Duncan-Brewster.
The premiere of “Dunes” is scheduled for December 17, 2023.
