Analysts: Steam Deck is not a direct competitor to Nintendo Switch

Game system Steam Deck from company Valve should not be called a direct competitor to the family of consoles Nintendo Switch… Despite a similar form factor, these devices target different audiences. Experts from the analytical agency came to the appropriate conclusions Omdia, informs the publication Gamasutra

In particular, the analyst Matthew Bailey noted that Switch is aimed at a wider console audience, including families with children and casual users, while the Steam Deck is positioned as a device for PC gamers with accounts Steam

“The most important point is that the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch should not be viewed as direct competitors. The two devices target two different market segments. For the Switch, the main audience is the more casual users accustomed to consoles. In turn, the Steam Deck – This is a system that Valve is clearly positioning as a PC, so PC users and the user base of the Steam service may be interested in it, “explained Matthew Bailey.

According to research by Omdia, on average, only one in ten PC gamers in the US is interested in the Switch and sees it as a “second gaming device.”

At the same time, Bailey added that Valve is not particularly at risk by releasing the Steam Deck to the market, since its further fate does not depend on how this system shows itself.

In turn, the analyst George Zhizhiashvili turned his attention to a potential problem with the Steam Deck, namely the level of support for the vast library of Steam games.

According to the specialist, the operating system SteamOS 3.0 in conjunction with Proton does not guarantee that all games available on Steam will run smoothly on the Steam Deck.

“According to the information provided on the user site ProtonDB, approximately 30% of projects from the 100 most popular Steam games without Linux support simply do not run. [с Proton] or are launched with very serious technical errors, “the analyst said.

Windows can be installed on the Steam Deck, but that raises many questions, Zhizhiashvili added.

“How such a maneuver will affect device performance and battery life remains to be seen.”

Launching the Steam Deck in a number of selected countries should be held in December this year.
