AMD explained how they were able to reduce the cost of processors – review

For several years now, a number of companies have been talking about the use of chipsets. This arrangement allows you to place heterogeneous crystals made on different technological processes on the same substrate. And yet this approach allows us to reduce the cost of production of finished processors by almost half compared with the monolithic structure, which is used in Intel.

According to AMDif you use a monolithic layout for a proprietary 16-core processor Ryzen 9 3950X, then it will cost more than twice as much as it is now. However, if you use a chiplet, you can save a lot.

The fact is that with this approach, it is not necessary to produce all the elements of the processor precisely according to the 7-nanometer process technology. Only kernels can be made this way, and other elements can be produced using a cheap 12-nanometer process technology. As a result, the price of the whole solution falls.

According to representatives of AMD, the new approach is used not only for server, but also for desktop processors, which allows us to keep prices low against Intel.
