Almost no difference: Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War tested on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X

VG Tech compared the performance of the recently released shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on consoles Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X / S

Resolution:

  • At 60 FPS with shadow ray tracing, both the PS5 and Series X use a dynamic resolution with the highest value of 3840 x 2160 and the lowest of 1920 x 1800.
  • The second mode that was tested is 120 FPS. In it, both consoles also rely on dynamic scaling, but the resolution ceiling is lower – 2560 x 1440 with drawdowns up to 1280 x 1200.
  • The Series S does not have both of these modes. The younger Microsoft nextgen console launches the game only in the only available option: 60 FPS and dynamic 1440p with a maximum reduction to 1280 x 1200.

Performance:

  • PS5 and Series X perform equally well in ray-traced mode, almost always being at 60 FPS.
  • It’s harder for both consoles to keep performance at a constant level in 120fps, but the performance is generally more or less the same for both platforms, with a slight margin towards PS5. The average frame rate was 100-110 FPS.
  • On the Series S, a couple of scenes from the test showed drawdowns of up to 50-45 FPS, but in most cases the frame counter stays tightly at 60 FPS.
