Bloomberg: EA Cancels Ambitious Gaia Project From Motive Studio

Publishing House Management Electronic Arts made the decision to cancel the development of a completely new project under the code name Gaia… We are talking about a long-term construction, for which the studio was responsible EA Motive

As the journalist writes Bloomberg Jason Schreier, the project in the open world was teased back in 2015. It was supervised by an ex-employee Ubisoft Jade Raymondwho produced Assassin’s creed, Watch dogs and Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

A small snippet of Gaia’s gameplay flashed in last year’s next-gen console video commercial. The developers called their brainchild an ambitious game with innovative gameplay, in which the player could “use his strength and creativity” (watch video from 1:00).

In reality, the project was in a production hell. In six years, development of Gaia had to be rebooted once, and in 2018 Jade Raymond left EA Motive. Several other top executives have joined Ubisoft.

As Schreier notes, the unification of Motive with leftovers BioWare Montrealwhich was marked as a failure Mass effect andromeda… The studio also transferred resources to the development of the shooter. Star Wars: Battlefront II… Many ideas from the latter migrated to Gaia, resulting in a “cultural conflict” in the team in early 2018.

The decision to close the problematic project was made as part of EA’s recently launched resource reallocation process. The publisher evaluated all the games in production, canceling the most problematic ones. One of them was Anthem NEXTthe other is Gaia.
