New coronavirus victim: GSMA announces cancellation of MWC 2023, the largest annual mobile industry exhibition

The largest annual exhibition of the mobile industry Mobile World Congress (MWC) this year will not take place. GSMA, which is hosting the event, has officially announced the cancellation MWC 2023 due to problems associated with the threat of coronavirus. The exhibition was to be held in Barcelona from February 24 to 27 this year.

“Paying due attention in a safe and healthy environment in Barcelona and the host country, GSMA canceled MWC 2023. Global concerns about coronavirus outbreaks affecting relocations and other circumstances make this event impossible“says the official GSMA statement.

Last year, more than 100,000 people visited MWC. Many of these people either came from China or worked for Chinese companies. Coronavirus most strongly hit China. According to updated official data, the number of deaths has already exceeded the mark of 1000 people, the number of infected is more than 43 thousand, and about 4 thousand people recovered.

The announcement was made after some large technology companies, such as Amazon, LG, Sony and NVIDIA, announced their plans to skip the conference to protect their employees from the spread of the virus.

However, the new devices that were planned to be presented at the MWC 2023 will be shown using other sources. For example, Sony said that it will present its latest smartphones on YouTube broadcasts, and LG plans to hold a number of separate events to announce its line of relevant devices.
