PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is the first battle royale to become very popular among players. Early access to the shooter was launched in March 2017, and within a couple of months its online presence approached a million users. After a full-fledged release, the peak online game amounted to more than three million people – PUBG even set a Steam record for this indicator, but the developers did not have long to rejoice. A few months later, statistics began to decline.

Bluehole took the right step and, during Early Access, held its first tournament at gamescom 2017 with a prize pool of $ 350,000. Views and indicators began to grow again, which naturally could not fail to interest esports organizations and tournament operators. In 2018, ESL and PGL launched the PUBG championships, and Natus Vincere, Liquid, Alliance, AVANGAR and other well-known clubs have rosters by discipline.
A few months later, PUBG Corporation announced a major with a prize pool of one million dollars, but despite the fact that the competitive component of the “royal battle” was actively developing, the shooter could not keep the audience’s attention. In the fall of 2018, the peak online PUBG fell to one million people, and the average rate decreased three times – to 540 thousand users. Why did the players start to lose interest?
Optimization
PUBG does not work perfectly even on the most powerful computers. The game attracted users with an interesting gameplay, which is why at first many turned a blind eye to poor optimization and hoped for quick improvements. Over the past two years, the developers have put a lot of effort into solving the problem, and some players even claimed that after the updates, PUBG began to work better.
However, users with weak and even medium-powered PCs still struggle to get back into the game. Even if you have a powerful PC that can easily handle Call of Duty: Warzone, you are still unlikely to achieve consistent frame rates in PUBG.
Bugs
Over the past three years, the PUBG developers have released many updates with fixes to bugs in the game, but the problem is that after each patch, new ones constantly pop up. One has only to remember the case from the PUBG Global Championship 2019 with a prize pool of $ 3 million – in one of the battles, the player drove a car into a building, and the transport flew up and disappeared from the radius of view. And yes, cars don’t fly in PUBG! Of course, there are bugs in every game, but not everywhere they appear so often and in such quantity, and after each patch. Plus, in PUBG, it can take months for developers to fix even known bugs.
Bots
In May 2023, the PUBG developers added bots to matches. Representatives of the game argued that the system is designed to help beginners get used to the shooter: according to the plan, the number of opponents with artificial intelligence should have been reduced with the growth of the user’s game level.
The concept was correct, but the implementation let us down: bots continued to appear in the matches of experienced users. Svyatoslav Drainys Komissarov criticized shooter, since enemies with AI came across him in single and double modes. At the same time, Drainys was one of the few former professional players who until the last believed in the prospects of the “royal battle”.
Cheaters
Undoubtedly, cheaters are an integral part of every online shooter, and developers have to find ways to combat them. The creators of PUBG have been waging this war for a long time, but so far they are far from winning it. Late 2019 PUBG Community Manager toldthat in the “royal battle” more than 100 thousand accounts are blocked weekly. But sometimes honest users, including professional players, also fall under the wave of bans, which once again proves that the system does not work correctly.
Every day, more and more complaints about dishonest players appear on reddit, which spoil the experience of the gameplay. For several years, PUBG fans have been waiting for the ranking system to appear to motivate them to keep playing, but here, too, cheaters spoiled everything, filling the leading places in the leaderboard. For this problem drew attention captain FaZe Clan David Fuzzface Tillberg Persson…
In 2023, PUBG Corp. introduced two-factor authentication via SMS, and from June 3 in the “royal battle” they began to ban “for iron”, but this did not give the result that the developers had hoped for. Now they plan to implement a mobile authenticator, but this is unlikely to save the situation.
Inability to revive an ally
The popular Battle Royale features an ally respawn function, which makes the gameplay more interesting for team players. In PUBG, after the death of teammates, you have to finish the match yourself or simply leave it. The developers do not want to add this feature and justify their decision by the fact that the gameplay of the shooter is based on realism. However, players and streamers have already suggested many ways to implement the respawn function without damaging the lore. For example, you can add the ability to carry your fallen allies to a special station with a defibrillator – in Battlefield this device did not bother anyone. PUBG developers should not ignore the trick and listen to the opinion of the community.
Graphics
Despite PUBG’s poor performance, its graphics are poor. Compared to other battle royals, the textures and models in the game look dull. Not so long ago, the shooter reworked the maps Erangel and Sanhok – yes, some areas began to look more beautiful, but these are still not the graphics that you expect from the game in 2023. And given the poor optimization, due to which you have to set the minimum settings, the textures look even worse.
Competition
When PUBG appeared, there were no worthy competitors for the game among the “battle royals”. Fortnite came out soon, but not everyone in the CIS liked the cartoonish style of the shooter. Nevertheless, Epic Games’ Battle Royale soon surpassed PUBG in popularity: after that, PUBG Corp. even sued Fortnite for copying gameplay elements from her game by Epic Games, but to no avail. However, it’s important to note here that Fortnite is free to download, while PUBG has to be paid for. ₽899.
Later, Call of Duty: Blackout came along, but failed to generate as much hype as PUBG and Fortnite. In 2019, Apex Legends was born, which everyone predicted to become a Fortnite killer. Its developers have introduced many new features in the battle royale genre, which attracted an impressive player base. Finally, in 2023, Activision released Warzone – more than 60 million people played it in less than two months. The developers did not stop at the unsuccessful experiment with Blackout and got the result they hoped for. Every year the battle royale genre is improving, the competition is growing. PUBG Corp. it’s time to realize your mistakes and refresh the formula in order to attract new players and return those who left because of wasted nerves after bugs and lags.
