5G launch in Russia may be delayed until 2024 – review

Strategic Development Director, PJSCRostelecom“Alesya Mamchur said that the deadlines for launching 5G networks in 10 Russian cities with a population of one million people may be delayed by 2024, although the National Program indicates 2023.

The reasons, according to Mamchur, were the prospects for the use of domestic equipment, as well as the allocation of frequencies. The Director noted that the new deadlines have already been spelled out in the roadmap, which was proposed by Rostelecom and “Rostec“. Although it has not yet been approved by the government.

The situation with frequencies remains uncertain. The reason was the disagreement between the Ministry of Communications and the power departments, because the latter use the frequency of the “golden range” of 3.4-3.8 GHz. Instead, other bands are offered to operators, including 24.25-24.65 GHz.

A MTS, as previously reported, will receive frequencies from the “golden range” for testing the fifth generation network in Moscow.
