Long-suffering sequel Duke Nukem 3D went through many iterations. During development, the authors canceled several versions. For instance, Duke nukem forever 2001 was very gloomy and serious.
According to the vice president of the studio 3D Realms by Frederick Schreiber, it was 90% complete and contained 14-16 hours of gameplay, and from the point of view of achieving the goal was perceived almost as an RPG. Users, without leaving the menu, could choose what mission to pass. The game also had inventory, gamers met and saved various NPCs, solved puzzles and tried to solve the mystery of what was happening. Formerly founder of Gearbox Randy Pitchford stated that the company was working on a license in order to include the 2001 build in a new add-on for Duke Nukem Forever. Unfortunately, since March 2018, not a word has been heard about this.
Duke Nukem Forever has been in development for fourteen years and was released June 10, 2011 on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. At the time of release, the game was crushed by users and critics.
