Why do we not see Geralt and Ciri completely naked in The Witcher 3? Developers from CD Projekt RED explain

AT The witcher 3 players control the witcher Geralt and his adopted daughter Ciri. Despite the role-playing game of the Polish studio CD Projekt RED includes scenes where many characters appear naked; we do not see Geralt and Ciri completely naked. What is the reason for this? It turns out that it is not only the censorship of rating agencies.

As the developers explained to the German edition of GameStar, they made a conscious decision not to show heroes naked. At some point, Ciri appears in a bandage covering her chest, and Geralt is usually depicted naked to the waist.

This is done for a reason. The player subconsciously associates himself with the hero he controls, so CD Projekt RED intentionally created him more chaste than other characters.

“The character controlled by the players has a more significant role,” says Carolyn Wendt. “Accordingly, there is an increased risk of devaluing its value.”

In addition, rating agencies evaluate the game with a leading, completely naked character in a completely different way.

“Judging by the experience of developing our past projects, when you have a nude controlled hero, the game is evaluated differently,” says Fabian Mario Doel.

As for the rating agencies themselves, the German organization USK believes that “nudity” has a strong influence on the psychological development of young people who play video games. However, the USK also pays attention to the context of what is happening.

“If you portray naked people in a sexual or violent context, then it is possible to aggravate the situation, in extreme cases even threatening young people and, therefore, leading to high ratings.”

In any case, in Germany, The Witcher 3 was assigned an age rating of “from 18 years.” The description of the game contains explicit acts of violence, controversial topics such as racism, and numerous scenes of a sexual nature.
