What could be the adaptation of BioShock?

In the hands of the author of the portal Birth.Movies.Death. hit the screen version Bioshock, which never reached the screens in due time.
He carefully dismantled it and made a general impression of how this film might have become.
History of rise and fall
First BioShock from 2K Games saw the light in 2007, and Hollywood did not take a long time to get the rights to adapt it – already in 2008 it acquired them Universal.
Hired as a director Mount Verbinski (“Pirates of the Caribbean”, “Call”), and was responsible for the script John Logan (“Gladiator”, “The Last Samurai”). However, 8 weeks before the start of full-fledged production, the studio abandoned the project.
The reasons were simple: Universal scared the big budget of the picture, which was estimated at about 160-200 million dollars, as well as the high age rating “R” (from 17 years), which Verbinsky intended to keep.
Another reason for the refusal was the fact that at the same time in Hollywood a series of films with the same rating failed, which made the studio nervous much more. Ultimately, Universal decided that the project was not worth the risk.
Scenario
A copy of the script, which fell into the hands of the author of the portal, consists of 119 pages. Apparently, John Logan tried to convey the atmosphere and mood of the original game as much as possible, while remaining faithful to the original source.
A short prologue of history takes the viewer to the 60s, after which the plot largely repeats the events of the first part – the plane with the main character Jack falls into the ocean, the character finds the lighthouse and through it goes to the underwater city, and then the splicers attack the bathysphere. At the same time, Logan left untouched the first famous monologue Andrew Ryan.
After joining, Jack gets to know Atlas, an adversary of Ryan, while simultaneously exploring surroundings that are very similar to what the user saw in the game. The global difference is that now the main character voices his thoughts.
In the film, Jack is driven by the desire to be free – not only from the shackles of the surrounding city, but from restrictions. He appears on the plane because his father had already planned his career after college. By the way, in the role of Jack, the author of the article represented someone like the young Edward Norton.
After the first events, the hero gets involved in a scuffle with splicers, which in the script are described as terrible creatures moving in the manner of spiders. All of them are crazy and extremely cruel.
As an example, a scene is described when Jack spies on two mutants playing the roles of a bride and a groom – later all this develops into a bloody brawl. The bride kills the bridegroom, and then puts his dead head on her lap and feeds her with a wedding cake.
In the end, Jack meets with Atlas, who tells him about current events in the city. After that, they encounter the artist Sander Cohen, who, as in the game, creates his disgusting-crazy masterpiece.
This meeting quickly goes into battle, where a bunch of splicers is involved. In the process, Jack injects himself with the drug “ADAM” for the first time, which gives him strength and confidence, and also causes a thirst for blood. He breaks all the splicers into pieces, and then moves away from the drug, developing dependence on it.
Further adventures
Throughout the story, Jack non-stop travels through many locations of the city, visiting places familiar to players – for example, the complex “Gifts of Neptune”, Sander Gallery, medical pavilion and so on.
Jack and Atlas are separated against their will, after which the hero makes his way to the very complex, next to which Andrew Ryan’s office is located. On the way, he meets Little Sisters and, of course, Big Daddy. The terrified character runs away from the terrible creature, barely surviving in the process.
The author of the text draws attention to the fact that they wanted to give an adult rating to the film for a reason. The brutality on the screen is demonstrated quickly and severely, but there are especially dark scenes – the brutal murder of the Little Sister or the scene when Jack is torn off his ear.
And this is not to mention the other physical miracles that are shown in the script.
After Jack arrives at Andrew Ryan’s office, where a familiar twist occurs to players, with references to the key phrase “Be nice” scattered in the dialogue of characters and the environment of the city throughout history.
After the character deals with Ryan, to an amazing ending. There were several endings in the game, which depended on different decisions during the course of the story.
The film concentrates on a dark version of the story, which Logan, according to the author of the article, made even darker. He does not go into details, but notes that this is a hopeless and cruel ending – he probably might not have liked an audience unfamiliar with the game.
According to him, it is surprising that Universal was going to deliver an adaptation with such a conclusion.
Conclusion
According to rumors, the studio is now thinking about returning the project, but there is no evidence of this.
In conclusion, the author adds that if the film did not find popularity with a wide audience, fans of the game and horror would definitely like it. He had a good chance of becoming a truly popular adaptation. So to speak, arouse “delight” in the viewer.
