“We have set quality standards” – Kazunori Yamauchi spoke about the impact of Gran Turismo on the genre of car simulators

Exclusive for consoles Playstation car simulator series Gran turismo set standards for the whole genre in its time, said the creator of the series and the head of the studio Polyphony digital Kazunori Yamauchi in an interview with the site Motorsport.com.

Released in 1997 for the original Playstation the first part of Gran Turismo raised the bar for racing titles and was among the best games of all time. She was able to make the genre of car simulators accessible to a wide audience and offered gamers a huge number of virtual cars and tracks, along with realistic physics and graphics.

According to Yamauchi, the success of Gran Turismo is partly due to the fact that at the time of the debut of the series, the niche was free, as a result of which his brainchild became the quality standard for developers of other series for a long time, including Forza motorsport, Assetto corsa, Project cars and Grid. One way or another, they created their games with an eye on the Japanese hit series.

“It’s not easy to create something that could become a new standard. But we were able to do it, we were lucky.”

As another example, Polyphony Digital’s leader cited the group Beatles, without which, according to the developer, there would not be many talented musicians.
