Valve told why she decided to create a prequel for VR, not a continuation of the story of Half-Life

Since last fall Valve announced Half-Life: Alyx, fans of the series do not cease to wonder why the developers decided to make a prequel, and not everyone expected Half-life 3.

In an interview with the magazine EDGE the company gave an explanation, citing the exclusivity of the game for VR.

“There was a reason why we decided to make a prequel. We understood that the VR platform had a limited audience and immediately set ourselves the idea that it would not be Half-Life 3. We did not want to release a product that would move the storyline beyond HL2 , but at the same time I wouldn’t be accessible to a wide circle of Half-Life fans, leaving everyone who does not have VR with the question “why can’t I participate in this?” said Dario Casali, level designer.

“The decision to make this part, which from a technical point of view will not be available to a large number of people, was not easy for us. We thought about it for a long time and will continue to think in the future, since we have no goal of releasing Half-Life games only for a relatively small audience.” – added Greg Kumer, designer.

In other words, Half-Life 3 will not become an exclusive VR, at least as long as the virtual reality market remains niche. As for Alyx, artist Robert Briscoe and Greg Kumer of Valve explained why this part is in any case very interesting from the point of view of the plot, despite the fact that it is a prequel.

“Brisco: Between Half-Life 1 and 2 there was a completely unexplored space. For me, the project became super-interesting, since I, as a fan, always wanted to study the history of the universe from this point of view.”

“Kumer: Alyx really promotes the storyline in ways that prequels often use, but not directly, chronologically, but in the past Half-Life 2.”
