Steam Deck until now was positioned as a gaming PC in a portable format, but in the presence of sufficiently powerful hardware based on Zen 2 and RDNA 2, as well as the ability to display an image on an external monitor, the device may well be a good solution for desktop gaming. For a price that starts from 399 dollars, it will be difficult for you to find or assemble a similar system on your own using traditional components.
It turned out that the developers themselves think approximately the same. In conversation with the publication Rock, Paper, Shotgun Valve designers Greg Coomer and Lawrence Young confidently stated that many users will choose Steam Deck instead of upgrading their existing PCs…
Coomer: “We’re not very confident that a large number of people will choose the Steam Deck as their first PC, but when it comes to upgrading an existing PC, we’re pretty sure the Steam Deck will be the choice of many.”
Young: “Yes, I think this is a viable solution. With the Steam Deck, you can do whatever you would do on a PC. Basically, it’s a small computer that can be wired with all sorts of things.”
A docking station was announced with the Steam Deck, sold separately, but unlike the Nintendo Switch use a console Valve in stationary mode it will be possible without it. The developers confirmed that a simple USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort adapter is enough to connect an external display…
In this case, the Steam Deck will be able to display a resolution higher than its own screen, equal to 1280 x 800 pixels, but performance will depend on the specific game and the settings set.
Young: “Everything here is like with any other PC in the sense that the more you raise the resolution, the more games will begin to slow down below the target frame rate of 30 frames per second. With PC games, you can change the settings. If you go to display the image on the monitor in 4K and reduce the textures, then most likely everything will work fine. “
Steam Deck pre-orders are already open on Steam with three different memory configurations. Shipments to customers on a first-come, first-served basis are scheduled to begin at the end of this year.
