To the editors of the portal Gamemag.ru a new test came Honor Magicbook Pro. This is the second generation of brand laptops, which also includes the younger version – Magicbook 14.
In Russia, they ask for 59 990 rubles for the “proshka” (but you can save money, because the official store constantly holds promotions with additional discounts and gifts), and 44 999 rubles for the “14th” model.
Honor Magicbook Pro comes in a compact cardboard box with a convenient handle, where it is securely packed in shockproof foam blocks and a protective film. The package includes the laptop itself, a medium-sized power adapter, a USB Type-C cable – USB Type-C for charging (1.8 m), instructions and a warranty.
Externally, the device is quite standard for ultrabooks. The dimensions of the gadget are 17 mm x 369 mm x 234 mm. It is not heavy and fits easily in a backpack. Weight – 1.7 kg.
For comparison – PS4 Pro weighs 3.3 kg, PS4 Slim – 2.1 kg, and the hybrid Nintendo Switch – 0.4 kg.
The ultrabook case is not easily soiled and is made of gray aluminum. The strict design does not attract too much attention, but it looks quite nice. On the top cover is a small Honor logo.
Bottom on the back of the case are two longitudinal rubberized legs and a wide “ribbon” of small holes for intake of cold air.
Heat is removed through a narrow radiator grill in the space at the upper end (on the verge of the keyboard above): hot air is blown out to the very bottom of the lower frame of the screen in the opposite direction from the user.
On the left end are: entrance USB Type-C to power and work with external devices (such as card readers), USB Type-A 3.0, HDMI and a light sensor. On the right side are two USB Type-A 3.0 and 3.5 mm mini-jacks for a wired headset.
Build is good. The case does not creak and does not play. The top cover gently rises, lowers and locks in any position.
90% of the surface of the inside of the lid is occupied by a matte Full HD 60 Hz IPS screen. The diagonal is 16.1 inches. The visible area of the screen is 355 x 199 mm. The number of pixels per inch is 137. The clarity is normal. Pixels can be seen if you look closely at very close range.
The screen does not have touch functionality. Proportions: 16: 9.
Compared with the first version of 2019, designers pumped the laptop maximum brightness, which now amounts to 300 nits. This is standard for office screens and bright rooms, but on the street in summer there will be a lack of brightness.
The viewing angles are excellent. When looking at the display from the side, shade does not degrade. Colors remain vibrant and contrasting.
The black level, like most IPS screens, is weak – you can see the glow and light at the edges, if you look at black in the dark. In the afternoon and in the light it is not noticeable.
The uniformity of the shades is excellent. I did not find any dirty stains and blurred colors.
The bottom frame with the Magicbook logo takes up 14 mm. And the upper and side frames are minimal – a little less than 5 mm on each side. Engineers were able to achieve this result by moving the camera for chats from the screen to the keyboard, where the lens is mounted in a special button hidden between F6 and F7, which rises when pressed. Accordingly, you always have the option to quickly stop the broadcast mechanically.
The webcam itself is pretty standard – a 1 megapixel camera produces a good image only in bright light. In other cases, the picture is pixelated, but it is enough for video conferencing in Skype.
It is worth noting that due to the specific location of the lens, the interlocutor looks at you from below. It looks a little weird.
About half of the bottom of the case is occupied by a membrane keyboard (275 x 105 mm) with an American ANSI layout. English letters are slightly larger than Russian ones. Printing is convenient, even if you have big hands.
When you press the buttons, the keyboard does not push down. But if you specifically strongly push the center, then it drops a little. Along the edges of the keyboard, this also happens, but not so much.
You can turn on the backlight of the keys (letters and outline glow white) – there are two levels of brightness. But in bright rooms, even at the maximum effect is practically not visible.
You can see the backlight only at night, if the brightness is set to the minimum value or the screen is turned upward from the keyboard, so the display shines on the keyboard several times brighter than the light of the buttons. In addition, the laptop turns off the keyboard after 15 seconds of inactivity until you press one of the keys.
Only individual LEDs on the Caps and Fn buttons turned out bright, which glow in the corner when you click on them. It is very comfortable.
Under the keyboard is a large touch panel 112 x 72 mm. A little lower is the bevel of the case for convenient raising the screen.
When folded, the upper screen, thanks to a thin slightly protruding frame, fits snugly to the bottom of the laptop, leaving no gaps along the main perimeter.
Two speakers are integrated on the sides of the keyboard. They produce a good and surprisingly very loud sound, which is more than enough to watch movies and blogs on YouTubelistening to music, games and chatting in voice chats even in high-profile rooms. The sound quality is not bad, but the bass is clearly not enough.
Honor Magicbook Pro has support Dolby atmos, which turns on only when connecting special headphones.
The sound that is output through the 3.5 mm minijack is quite loud and high-quality, but here a lot depends on the headset itself.
The right speaker next to the Del button has a small round recess, where the laptop’s power button is located, which in combination is a fingerprint sensor. It works instantly – it’s quite convenient to quickly unlock the device without entering a PIN code using the keyboard.
Honor Magicbook Pro assembled based on company technology AMD. The central processor here is a quad-core 8-stream AMD Ryzen 5 3550H (12 nm) with a base clock frequency of 2100 MHz (up to 3700 MHz), which works in conjunction with an integrated graphics card Radeon Vega 8 Graphics 1200 MHz. RAM 8 GB DDR4 (two dice of 4 GB), 1 GB of which is allocated for video.
Two fans provide cooling. Usually they do not make noise, but if you turn on heavy applications, the sound is well audible. Sometimes coolers begin to spin while charging.
The battery capacity is 56 Wh * h. A full charge from zero to 100% occurs in 1 hour 50 minutes. One charge is enough for one working day in office applications and mail. Or about 5 hours of watching FullHD video.
I had enough charge for three films at a maximum image brightness and volume of 20% (the optimal value for a quiet room).
Games begin to drain significantly faster, draining the battery in 1 hour, so if you want to play, it’s best to do it with mains power.
The Honor Magicbook Pro is immediately monolingual Windows 10 Home Edition. In basic and office applications, the system works very quickly and smoothly. Extra speed provides NVMe SSD Western Digital PC SN730 512 GB, which by default is divided into two separate disks (80 GB and 381 GB).
In the test Crystaldiskmark It shows excellent results – 2870 MB / s for reading and 2722 MB / s for writing. Turning on the computer (to the Windows desktop) occurs in exactly 7 seconds. Awakening after 12 hours of inactivity – 2 seconds.
Games basically load quickly too, but the filling itself is clearly not intended for modern releases. For instance, Doom eternal does not work on the device, crashing with an error due to lack of memory.
Doom 2016 at 1080p it works at low graphics settings at 30 FPS and manages to look pretty. But after about an hour of play, the processor begins to heat up to 80+ degrees Celsius and there is a sharp slowdown.
Roughly the same thing happens with the most beautiful turn-based tactical RPG – Gears tactics. On the Honor Magicbook Pro at 1080p at the minimum graphics settings, it runs at 30 FPS, but the laptop starts to overheat, sometimes giving out 90 degrees Celsius on the GPU sensor.
But in Forza horizon 4 You can play normally. Racing hit from Microsoft although it notifies that the video card is not supported, it still starts up without overheating the system (the temperature of the video processor is about 75 degrees after an hour of play).
The first download is very long, since the game is optimized for the system, but then the start of the UK map from the main menu takes about 35 seconds. Loads between races – from 1 to 7 seconds.
In 1080p at the minimum graphics settings with the automatic image scaling enabled Fh4 It works at 30 frames per second, sometimes failing during load times.
Surprisingly, the game even looks so pretty.
In turn DOTA 2 at maximum settings it looks beautiful and produces an average of 30 FPS. The temperature of the video card is about 75 degrees Celsius.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive flies at 60 FPS at maximum settings in 1080p and FXAA. The shooter is played very comfortably, while the video card heats up to about 70 degrees Celsius.
War thunder at 1080p it works at maximum settings with FXAA at 30 FPS. The temperature of the video card is kept at about 73 degrees.
That is, in fact, you can play on the Honor Magicbook Pro, but not all.
Concerning 3Dmark, the device displays the following values:
Graphics tests:
- Night Raid – 9 376 points (Graphics 10 803, Processor 5 364);
- Fire Strike – 2 418 (Graphics 2 649, Physics 10 714, Combination 859).
Stress tests:
- Night Raid Stress test – Test Passed – 99.7%;
- Fire Strike Stress test – Test passed – 97.1%.
It is worth noting that with prolonged gaming use, the case in the hottest part (above the keyboard in the center) – right next to the hot air blowing area – was heated to 43 degrees Celsius. The rest of the laptop is colder. For example, the neighboring area above the speakers heats up to a maximum of 38 degrees. The bottom of the laptop and the area on the back are much colder.
Another feature of the device is the availability of technology. Honor Magic-link, which allows you to bring the brand smartphone to a special area on the laptop case to the right of the touchpad and synchronize these gadgets. It happens instantly, much like NFC, and you see the screen of the smartphone and can use it through a laptop.
Honor Magicbook Pro – A good laptop for working with the ability to play some games, which pleased with the high-quality materials of the compact aluminum case, high-quality IPS-screen with a thin frame and fast speed. If you are looking for an option for the office, then you can take a closer look, especially if you can get it at a discount.
