In conversation with the portal Wccftech Ukrainian studio Frogwares spoke not only about the success of The Sinking City and her next project, but also touched on the topic of recently presented specifications for next-generation consoles.
Frogwares Public Relations Manager Sergey Hovhannisyan said that developing projects with open worlds on the new hardware would be much simpler – largely thanks to the SSDs installed inside Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X.
“We are pleased to be moving to a much faster SSD drive. It makes life easier and saves time when developing games with open worlds.”
When asked if the specifications presented were enough to talk about the 60FPS frame rate as a standard for non-x-ray, he doubted that small studios might have problems.
“I believe that an increasing number of developers will offer you a choice between resolution and frame rate. Personally, I hope that the frame rate of 60 FPS will become the standard, but optimization is not such a simple process, especially for small studios.”
According to Hovhannisyan, we will have to wait a bit before we see truly breathtaking nextgen games, since at first crossgen projects will dominate. In the end, Microsoft itself at the beginning of this year already statedthat exclusive games for the Xbox Series X will appear only a year or two after the launch of the console.
“Looking back at what happened after the current generation of consoles was introduced, we probably shouldn’t expect an absolutely unbelievable leap in terms of game quality standards, because for some time cross-gen projects will dominate the market. It just seems to me that “developers will not be able to instantly abandon support for an impressive user base that has grown during the current console cycle, unless console manufacturers are financially compensated for their potentially low sales.”
“But we should definitely rely on improved textures, better frame rates, better lighting, better loading times, more mastable maps, more detailed environments, and so on. This is more than enough, and the changes will be more than significant.”
“We already have incredibly beautiful Red Dead Redemption 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn at our disposal, and I can’t even imagine how good these games will look on the hardware of the next generation.”
Both next-generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony should go on sale in “Pre-holiday season of 2023”. There is no talk about the delay in the release of consoles yet.
