Much to our regret, most modern adaptations of literary works for teenagers ended in complete failure, regardless of the quality of the source material. Unexpected exceptions include only the first part “Twilight“And with a big stretch the starting chapter”The Maze Runner”.
The way to film the book trilogy Patrick Ness “Chaos tread”Began back in 2017, but the finished film was never released due to the negative reaction of the audience on test screenings and the impossibility of additional filming due to busyness Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley in other projects. At this time, Tom was working on “Spiderman“And Ridley was busy in”Star Wars”. And now, three years later, the picture was released in large hire, turning Tom Holland into a world analogue. Alexandra Petrova… In any case, this is the third film with an English actor in the last six months. But let’s return from historical excursions to the plot of the project itself.
In the center of the story is the near future, where humanity has long left the solar system. In one of the colonies on an unnamed planet lives a simple-minded guy Todd Hewitt. The colonists in his settlement of Prenticestown lead a primitive lifestyle, and all the women were exterminated by aggressive aborigines. And then the astronaut of the second wave, Violla, literally falls from the sky into the male world. The heroine, played by Daisy Ridley, must contact the main ship so that he can land on the planet and continue the colonization. But the residents of Prentissstown, led by Mayor Perentiss, want to hijack the ship and stop Violla from delivering the warning message … There is another ulterior motive behind this aggressive urge that will be revealed by the middle of the story.
Violla and Todd’s journey in search of the transmitter becomes the central theme of the story. However, one feature adds piquancy to the plot – the atmosphere of the planet creates the Noise virus, which infects the entire male population of the colonists, forcing them to create mental images. Thus, you can see everything that they think about, what they dream about or what they dream about at a given time. Women are not affected by “Noise”, so their memories and thoughts remain closed to others. Unfortunately, the authors clearly fail to draw the entire film on this one idea. A couple of flat jokes – and nothing more.
If you do not take into account the rather banal plot plot and “Noise”, “Chaos Treads” is a very boring movie. Many ideas do not get their development, the natives, declared as some of the opponents, appear in the frame for only a few minutes, and between the heroes of Tom and Daisy for an hour and a half of history, no chemistry is formed.
A little action at the end only demonstrates that Holland will not be the worst Nathan Drake – in any case, he definitely knows how to climb walls and metal structures. Otherwise, “Treads of Chaos” simply gets bogged down in boring dialogues, weak motivation, a drawn-out story and a completely banal denouement. At the same time, most of the characters are faded or empty, with the exception of perhaps two gay cowboys, Todd’s adoptive parents. But spending almost two hours of your time for these sweet trustees of Holland’s hero is clearly not worth it.
