“This is a disaster”: Hasan Kahraman on Abandoned’s failed teaser, accusations and attributed ties to Kojima

Watch out for conspiracies around Abandoned turned out to be almost more interesting than the game itself. Some believe that all this is another clever trick of Hideo Kojima, others tend to the usual hype on pseudo-mystery, and still others even accuse the developers of fraud.

Against the background of all this, the edition NME got the opportunity to take an exclusive interview with the head Blue Box Game Studios Hasan Kahraman, trying to find the answers and dot the “i’s” as to what this Abandoned really is. All the most important information is collected below.

  • Abandoned is a survival shooter. It has some horror elements, but it’s not a full-fledged horror movie.
  • Journalists in an exclusive format have read the summary of the game and can confirm that the project is not related to Silent Hill and Metal Gear, and the developer himself insists that Hideo Kojima has nothing to do with Abandoned. A recent tweet from a game designer, which some fans saw as a hint of a connection with Blue Box, could be considered a coincidence (or not?).

“Abandoned is not at all what you think. Not even close.”

  • The authors have abandoned the originally claimed open world for high quality graphics and are now making a linear story.
  • The peculiarity of Abandoned is that all your actions in the game affect the protagonist. For example, if you start running, the character will end up out of breath, which in turn will impair aiming. With fear, the hero becomes nervous, which also affects the passage in its own way.
  • According to Kahraman, thanks to this mechanic, the game will feel completely different from anything, and this is due to, among other things, high-quality motion capture. The studio itself takes care of the whole process and creates game systems based on animation data.

“It seems to me that this mechanic is something really amazing. What we have at the moment is not yet ready for public demonstration, but once we polish everything, we will definitely show some footage.”

  • Kahraman admitted that the decision to release the Abandoned interactive trailer app was a real headache for him. The studio was unable to publish the promised teaser in time due to technical issues, and when the update was finally released, it turned out to contain old footage of a 4-second video already shown on Twitter.

“This is a really big disaster. People are really disappointed.”

  • At the same time, the developer said that initially the teaser contained more frames, but some of them had to be cut, as there were problems with the engine, because of which everything went in the wrong place. The project is being made on Unreal Engine 5. Perhaps the fact that the technology is still in early access could somehow have an impact.

“I knew it wasn’t a good idea to use the same footage that we tweeted as it’s only four seconds of footage that doesn’t really do much, but we had to go for it because everyone wanted to get the patch, so Our first priority was to just release the patch because we will add more content later. “

  • The next in line in Blue Box’s plans is the release of a cinematic trailer, which should appear already “very soon”. At first, the authors aimed at Gamescom 2023, but due to the problematic release of the teaser and the reluctance to step on the same rake, now the developers do not want to announce any dates in advance.

“Because if we screw up, we’ll screw it up forever.”

  • After a “short time”, a playable prologue will appear next, but again, so far, all without specific terms.

  • Kahraman also considered unsuccessful the decision to publish a blurred image of a face with an eye patch, in which everyone immediately saw Solid Snake. In fact, this is a completely different character who will be the villain of the game with meta-abilities.
  • In the end, the author reacted to allegations that the studio was acting fraudulently, laundering money on unsuccessful games launches.

“With Rewind we did Kickstarter. Then we got a private investor, but the game had to be canceled after a year because we needed more funds. They say that we used the project to embezzle money … but that doesn’t make any sense because funds are needed return to the investor, right? If you don’t return them, then they will become a debt. The investor will not tell you: “Here is the money, if it doesn’t work out, keep it for yourself.” It doesn’t happen! I’m just trying to figure out which of us can be scammers ? “.

  • The problem seems to be related to the fact that Blue Box has counted as many as six failed releases since 2015. For example, the horror movie The Haunting never left Early Access. Kahraman explained that there were a lot of mistakes in the game and the studio considered it wrong to charge for that kind of money, personally contacting Valve with a request to remove the project from sale. After that, the development of The Haunting was transferred to friends of the studio from CreateQ Interactive, who are working on the title in their spare time.
  • Be that as it may, the whole situation with the accusations, according to Kahraman, negatively affected the development team, and he himself is now very depressed.

“I can’t sleep, I can’t eat. What worries me most is that people label us as scammers. It really hurts. I didn’t have any of that in my mind. We’re here primarily to make games. that people will like. “
