Specialists of the technical department Eurogamer tested The Last of Us: Part II and talked about their impressions. Like all journalists whose previews were published June 1stto employees Digital foundry allowed to highlight only a two-hour segment of the game. However, this did not stop them. Experts called The Last of Us: Part II a work of art for the current generation and a worthy end to an era Playstation 4.
The main material from DF read below.
- On the PlayStation 4 Pro, The Last of Us Part II runs at 1440p at 30 FPS.
- During the game, rare drawdowns are observed, but overall the frame rate is stable. Compared to Uncharted 4, performance has been improved.
- Ellie’s story unfolds in a world with an almost complete absence of artificial lighting, so most locations are lit only by the sun. The authors focus on indirect lighting using their own technology. The way light interacts with rich geometry and materials is impressive.
- In addition, experts note the quality of rendering and reflections. Separately, the parts of the visual design of the game are very effective, but the best option is achieved when they are all combined together.
- Naughty Dog spent many hours of painstaking work combining and arranging parts of the location. The sequel encourages the study of back streets. In The Last of Us: Part II, the echoes of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy with its more open environment are clearly visible.
- AI, which has improved significantly compared to the first game, deserves special mention. This applies not only to smart opponents, but also to understanding partners. In the original, the partnership between Ally and Joel was not as realistic as the characters are now behaving.
In general, experts say DF, The Last of Us Part II plays the same role as its predecessor. Coming to the end of the life of PlayStation 4 and just five months before the next generation, the second part of the Naughty Dog series becomes a real work of art. This is not the last significant game of the platform – Ghost of Tsushima from Sucker Punch will be released in a month – however, it can play a key role in the fate of the upcoming PlayStation 5, possibly even at launch.
The Last of Us was presented on the new platform as a remaster, although it was a necessary port for adapting the Naughty Dog engine for the new architecture, which appeared eight months after the launch of PS4. Most likely, such a fundamental reconstruction will not be needed to transfer TLOU2 to PS5, where the transition should be much smoother. It is possible that The Last of Us Part II Remastered is waiting for higher resolution and 60 FPS, which will provide the release of the patch.
The Last of Us Part II will go on sale June 19 exclusively on the PlayStation 4.
