The New Adventures of the Former King of Hell: Review of the TV Series “Lucifer – Season 5” from Netflix

After parting with the company at the peak of the intensity of passions in the third season Fox and moving to Netflix, “Lucifer”Received much more creative freedom and funding. The fourth season was fairly smooth, but the show really got the real impetus to the penultimate, fifth volume.

According to the new testaments Netflix (which has already cut Lupine), the fifth season was split into two parts, the second half of which was released on May 28 this year. The budget has grown significantly, but part of the new season has fallen into the trap “Supernatural”With his filler episodes and heroes constantly dying and coming back to life. In addition, the focus has shifted from investigating interesting crimes to psychological relationships between key figures in the story. And although Tom Ellis in the role of Lucifer draws out most of the screen time along with the ingenious splashes of Maze performed by Lesley-Ann Brandt, the season suffered somewhat due to the protracted plot.

The project lacks the lightness and self-irony of the first seasons, although the authors try to roll out episodes in the noir style or almost a comedy musical that have become almost mandatory for long-running works. Here you can see the budget and creativity, but these are glossy inserts devoid of plot drive.

The new villain demonstrates Ellis’s multifaceted talent, but clearly does not pull on the main star of the series. The last two episodes save the season, but they put restrictions on the final volume – the sixth.

Despite the fact that “Lucifer” actually rests on the shoulders of Ellis and Brandt, the weakest and flattest character remains the detective Chloe Decker performed by Lauren German… Her heroine is too lost against the background of the rest of the participants. The ridiculous decisions of the showrunners include an attempt to glue the lesbian relationship between Maze and Eve, which, against the background of the main plot story, looks somehow completely superfluous and ridiculous. This is called useless inclusiveness for show.

But even taking into account the criticism above, the fifth season is still slightly better than the fourth chapter, which practically did not remember anything. The charm of Tom Ellis still makes you follow the adventures of the former king of hell, and the chemistry in the relationship with the naive and stupid Chloe Decker is still felt. I would like to believe that the final season will become a really bright and final chord of “Lucifer”.
