The Knights of the Round Table in reverse: The first details about the game King Arthur: Knight’s Tale

Last week’s revision GameMAG.ru had the opportunity to talk with the staff of the Hungarian studio NeocoreGames… In recent years, she is known to gamers for projects such as The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing and Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr… However, before that, the Hungarians conducted a rather interesting experiment, challenging Creative assembly and its flagship series Total war

Series King Arthur: The Role-playing Wargame is actually a forerunner Total War: Warhammer… The authors diversified the main concept with role-playing elements and spiced everything up with mythical elements and legends about King Arthur. Despite the fact that NeocoreGames did not manage to implement everything smoothly, two games from the King Arthur series turned out to be extremely interesting. And now the studio has decided to rethink the franchise by announcing King Arthur: Knight’s Tale

As the developers admitted, after Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr, they wanted to plunge into a dark fantasy. In addition, since the release King arthur ii eight years have passed, during which the studio has gained experience and learned a lot.

Knight’s Tale will offer an alternative take on the story of king arthurwhere everything will be turned upside down. Players will have to take command Sir Mordred, who in the legend acted as a negative character. However, in the NeocoreGames project, the character will determine his actions.

The studio representatives talked a lot about the fact that players will have to constantly make difficult decisions that will affect the kingdom of Avalon and Mordred himself. The latter needs to collect Knights of the Round Table and find King Arthur, whose nightmarish creatures are terrorizing the surrounding lands. And it depends on the gamers whether Mordred becomes a tyrant or a savior.

It is also interesting that the gameplay basis has been completely revised. NeocoreGames describes King Arthur: Knight’s Tale as a mix of Roguelite and tactical RPG genres. As a reference point, XCOM

What does this mean in practice? Players will have access to a global map, where kingdom of Avalon… Mordred’s base is Camelot castle, which can and should be developed. There are about 50 points of interest on the map, to which you will have to send units of units. In total, 20 main missions are declared for the game, not counting a few dozen minor ones.

Battles now take place in turn-based mode on the tactical map, and we take control of a small squad of heroes. The developers promise that players will find a variety of locations, and the surrounding area will be of great importance. The opportunities are also extensive: it is necessary to beware of traps, to conduct reconnaissance, take cover and determine the weaknesses of opponents. In total, Knight’s Tale will add seven enemy factions, more than 50 units (there are giant caterpillars!) And 10 bosses.

The knights of the Round Table play an important role in the battles. We are talking about 30 heroes, divided into five classes – they have to be pumped and equipped with equipment. However, you need to remember about loyalty. If the moral deeds of Mordred are not close to the heroes, then they can desert.

At the very beginning, we mentioned the Roguelite genre. This is expressed in the fact that each passage will be unique, which is associated with the decisions of the player. The developers also promise extensive endgame content.

The mortality of the knights will also have to be taken into account. If the hero died, then it will not work to resurrect him. And if he is cursed, poisoned or wounded, then it will take a certain time to heal. The only exception is Mordred himself, after whose death an instant Game Over will follow.

The visual range for NeocoreGames is far from the last in the list of priorities. To do this, the team mastered the Photoscan technology, which made the locations more realistic and atmospheric, and was also not too lazy to fork out for a mockup. The graphics engine supports PBR and DirectX 12

Having decided to create a new part of King Arthur, NeocoreGames wanted to maintain full creative control and not compromise, so they do not have a publisher. Instead, the studio launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign on October 13. The developers will focus on player feedback, based on which it is planned to make changes.

A beta test starts in November 2023, and a release on Steam is scheduled for the first quarter of 2023. Later, King Arthur: Knight’s Tale will get to the next generation consoles. There is no version for Nintendo Switch in the plans of the developers.
