Edition Famitsu shared the first data on sales of next generation consoles Playstation 5, Xbox series x and Xbox series s in Japan. In direct comparison with predecessors, the numbers turned out to be worse than at the start Playstation 4 and Xbox one in 2014, but journalists emphasize that both platform holders implemented in the country everything that we could ship to the start… If stores received more supplies, the numbers would definitely be better.
PlayStation 5 debuted in Japan with sales in 118,000 consoles as of 15 November 2023… Her two main bestsellers at the start were Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls – the disc circulation of each game has surpassed 18,000 copies, but Spider-Man is slightly ahead of Sony’s action RPG across the country…
Famitsu attributes low sales of software on discs to the lack of a full retail launch of the PlayStation 5. Due to the coronavirus, people have been asked not to queue up at retail stores. All PlayStation 5s sold in Japan at launch are essentially pre-orders with direct home delivery.
This is how all PlayStation consoles in Japan started (PlayStation 3 came out in 2006 with an even tighter deficit):
- (2000) PlayStation 2: 631,000
- (2004) PlayStation Portable: 166,000
- (2006) PlayStation 3: 88,000
- (2011) PlayStation Vita: 325,000
- (2014) PlayStation 4: 322,000
- (2020) PlayStation 5: 118,000
Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S Japan launch sales – 21,000 consoles… This is the worst metric in brand history by naked numbers, but context is important here. As noted above, Famitsu claims that stores have implemented everything they received from Microsoft. Moreover, some points of sale even arranged lotteries with the right to buy Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, albeit on a smaller scale than the PlayStation 5.
Xbox One debuted in Japan in 2014 with sales of 24,000 consoles, but then no sold-outs were recorded – in the debut week and after that, the successor to the Xbox 360 was freely available.
Biggest Initial Sales of Microsoft Systems in Japan Shows First Xbox (but in general terms, the absolute leader by a wide margin is the Xbox 360):
- (2001) Xbox: 124,000
- (2005) Xbox 360: 62,000
- (2014) Xbox One: 24,000
- (2020) Xbox Series X | S: 21,000
The full weekly Japanese sales charts will be released tomorrow at 4:00 pm ET.
