May 29th for Switch simultaneously come out XCOM 2: Collection, Borderlands: Legendary Collection and BioShock: The Collection. The transfer of games to the hybrid console was done by developers from the studio Virtuos. In a new interview, they talked about the creation of ports and appreciated the capabilities of the Nintendo hybrid platform.
Using XCOM 2 as an example, Virtuos senior producer Zhang Chengwei explained that while porting the game, they developed a smart universal rendering library that allows rendering directly on Switch without changing the original rendering module Unreal engine 3, which helped bypass the limitation on the amount of RAM – the console only 4 GB of RAM.
“I would say that we spent six months only on optimizing memory and tried many different methods during this period. We used more efficient file formats, got rid of unnecessary memory usage, and even modified and optimized the memory system of the original console.”
Virtuos also developed Switch versions of The Outer Worlds, Starlink: Battle for Atlas, Dark Souls: Remastered, L.A. Noire and other projects. Looking back at all the ports that are issued and in preparation, Chengwei noted that now they have no doubt that you can transfer absolutely any game from the current generation consoles to Switch.
“The more games we develop for Switch, the more experience we gain and the more opportunities we can squeeze out of an iron console.”
Although Switch versions of games such as Red Dead Redemption II are still only a dream, porting large projects to the console is indeed possible, as the developers have clearly demonstrated The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Now, a remaster of the first Crysis.
