The authors of the series “Hunters” were accused of contempt of history – review

The representative office of the Auschwitz memorial accused the creators of the series Hunters from Amazon in disrespect to history.

The plot of the project tells about a group of Nazi hunters who track and kill them in New York in the 70s. The author of the series is David Will, for whom “The Hunters” became a scripted debut.

A couple of days after the premiere of the series, the museum representative office in Auschwitz expressed dissatisfaction with the project. The stumbling block was the scene in which the concentration camp overseers play live chess, killing prisoners when the enemy eats them.

At Auschwitz there was a lot of violence and terrible suffering described in survivors’ documents.

To invent a nonexistent game of human chess is not only dangerous stupidity and caricature. This is including an invitation for those who in the future will deny the Holocaust.

The representative office notes that they respect the memory of the victims, adhering to real facts.

The creator of the project answered the allegations. Will noted that he felt responsible for preserving the history of the victims of the Holocaust, but added that he was not going to base the story on the tragic events of someone’s specific destinies.

Creating the series, I wanted to answer a key question that represents the most complex task of the Holocaust story: how to tell it without borrowing facts from someone’s specific lives?

Will added that they even deliberately gave the fake numbers to the prisoners so as not to accidentally hurt someone’s specific story, showing it in the wrong light.

At the same time, the series did not find great popularity among critics and viewers. On Metacritic he has 56 points out of 100 from reviewers and 4.9 / 10 from ordinary users. At Rotten Tomatoes the situation is better – 63% and 73% respectively.
