Testing: HDMI 2.1 bandwidth on PlayStation 5 is lower than Xbox Series X

Blogger Vincent Theo tested the signal output through the HDMI 2.1 port on Playstation 5 and found that the maximum bandwidth it can handle at 4K @ 60Hz or 4K @ 120Hz is currently 32 Gbps, which is lower than Xbox series xwith HDMI 2.1 bandwidth 40 Gbps

In practice, this means that when playing a game at 120Hz, the PS5 will have to switch to 4: 2: 2 color downsampling, while the Microsoft console will keep the 4: 4: 4 optimal format.

It is unclear if this is a hardware or software limitation. If it is the latter, then you can expect that Sony will release an improvement in one of the future software updates. However, this will only be a problem if you are playing a game with support for the 120 FPS, of which there are only three on PS5 now (Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, DiRT 5 and Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition), but even then the difference in image quality will hardly be noticeable

However, there is one aspect in which the PlayStation 5’s HDMI 2.1 implementation seems to be ahead of the Xbox Series X. This concerns the signaling method used Fixed Rate Linkwhich was selected for the HDMI 2.1 specification as a replacement TMDS… For some reason, even when connected to a TV with an HDMI 2.1 cable, the XSX continues to use TMDS when outputting at 60Hz, while the PS5 uses the more modern FRL. However, in practice, in this case, there should also not be much difference.because 4K @ 60Hz is fully supported by the HDMI 2.0 specification, which still uses TMDS as the signal transmission method.
