Switch is more popular than ever – Nintendo boosts production to cope with huge demand

Nintendo Switch in the context of the coronavirus pandemic seems to be an ideal device for gaming, but, unfortunately, to find a hybrid console in many countries of the world is very problematic or sometimes even impossible.

Coronavirus pandemic COVID-19 had a direct impact on production and supply chain Nintendo, resulting in a widespread shortage of game consoles – currently Switch sold to Amazon and most other major retailers, and mercantile resellers are asking for an incredible $ 600 for it. The cost of used systems comes to $ 500.

Fortunately arrived in time optimistic material Japanese edition Nikkei Asian Review, which says that Nintendo hopes not only to fully restore the production of set-top boxes in the coming months, but also to increase it compared to fiscal year 2019.

The growth should be at least 10%. According to experts, in the past fiscal year, the platform holder sold ~ 20 million Switch consoles to the market, so the plans for this year include a figure of 22 million devices.

Many systems in their fourth year of life begin to show decline, but Switch has a different dynamics. Now its main system seller is a life simulator Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which has become a real hit.

Given the fact that over the past few months Nintendo has produced only a small number of consoles, against which a shortage has formed, in the first and second quarters of this fiscal year we will see a sharp increase in production. According to Nikkei, some suppliers of components for Switches have already received orders from the Japanese company, the volumes of which are 50% more than previously planned.

Thus, if everything goes according to the plan described above, Switch, as before, can again be freely purchased in key markets in the world. However, it is now impossible to predict how the pandemic situation will develop further, so Nintendo cannot say with certainty how many consoles it can ship to the market.

“We hope that suppliers will promptly respond to an increase in production, but the prospects for the purchase of some parts for Switch remain uncertain. We can’t accurately predict how many consoles we can ship,” the report said.

As of December last year, Nintendo was able to sell 52 million Switch consoles, so it’s easy to imagine that the Japanese company intends to bring as many hybrid consoles to the market this year as possible before it faces competition from the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. If this year the Japanese platform holder will be able to sell ~ 22 million switches, then by March 2023 the total sales of the system will rush to the mark of 80 million. The cherished bar of 100 million will no longer seem unattainable.
