According to the studio website Roberts Space Industries, a crowdfunding campaign to fund the development of a space simulator Star citizen has already collected more than $ 350 million. The number of depositors exceeds 3 million.
Star Citizen’s crowdfunding campaign reached $ 250 million in December 2019, and $ 300 million last June. One of the most successful months was November 2023. The authors managed to raise $ 16.9 million thanks to the annual IAE in-game show.
As noted by GamesIndustry.biz, the developers describe a significant part of their income as crowdfunding, although the studio earns the bulk of the money from the sale of starter kits, in-game ships and items.
As a reminder, the original Star Citizen crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter started in October 2012, however, the space simulator itself and its single-player story campaign called Squadron 42 there are still no approximate release dates.
Late last year, Roberts Space Industries founder and Star Citizen development leader Chris Roberts said he would not be showing Squadron 42 gameplay publicly, nor would he discuss a release date until the team was near the finish line of the development process.
