Upcoming Playstation 5 will be fully compatible with the current version Playstation VRbut in the future a completely updated headset will be released for the new console. The latest evidence that in Sony develop the next generation virtual reality helmet, became the patent of a new control device for VR, capable of tracking the movement of fingers as controllers Valve index and Vive pro.
The patent application was filed in August 2018, but it was published only recently. The document describes a device that is attached to the palm of the hand with a strap so that the player can freely use it without having to hold it with a full grip. Among the controls on the controller there is a physical trigger, buttons and a panel with many sensors to track the position of each individual finger, which will allow for much more accurate interaction with the environment in games. In the upcoming Half-Life: Alyx this technology, for example, is already being actively developed.
The principle of the device is similar to the solutions for Valve Index and HTC Vive Pro, but differs from them in the ability to adjust the location of the sensor blocks in the handle of the controller depending on the size of the user’s hand. The patent explains that the device is designed so that “the user can adjust the positional relationship between the sensor and the finger in accordance with the size of his hand.”
It should be understood that patent images often use the simplest drawings, the essence of which is to convey the main idea and functionality, so the final design of the controller, if any, reaches the release, is likely to differ.
PlayStation 5 will launch this fall.
