Last summer the company Philips introduced a series of TVs Performance, which is designed to solve the problem of choosing between inexpensive solutions with compromises and premium ones with a bunch of modern technologies. In this series, the manufacturer has combined the most popular technologies in a stylish metal case in the middle price range from 50 to 100 thousand rubles.
A model from this line just came to our test – 58PUS8505 / 60 with a diagonal of 58 inches. The cost of the TV in the official store of the company is 72999 rubles… Also, this model is available with diagonals of 50 and 65 inches at the price 59999 and 89,990 rubles respectively.
PACKAGING AND COMPLETE SET
The TV is packaged in a traditional tall box made of thick thick cardboard with colorful blue-violet printing and a huge “The one to watch” lettering, as well as the Philips logo, the name of the Performance series, indicating the diagonal size and the Ambilight 3 logo. There are cutouts on the sides for convenient carrying.
Inside the box, which opens from the top, you will find not only a TV set among a pile of formatted foam, but also a swivel leg that is assembled from three parts. The kit also includes a brief visual instruction, a booklet with information on technical characteristics, a warranty card, a power cable and a remote control.
APPEARANCE AND CONNECTORS
Externally, the TV looks nice. The screen is surrounded by a light gray plastic frame. Its thickness is 19 mm on the sides and top, and 25 mm on the bottom. In the lower left corner, the manufacturer has applied a small Philips logo in white. Closer to the right corner, a block for controlling the IR remote sticks out from the bottom, and a joystick sticks out of it for control, if you suddenly do not want to look for the remote control.
The TV leg is made of metal in the shape of an inverted T. Thanks to it, the TV not only rises 70 mm above the surface, but the screen can also be rotated to the right and left by about 30 degrees. The height above the surface will not be enough to put modern consoles such as PS5, Xbox Series X or S under the 58PUS8505 / 60. But the “vanilla” PS4 and “slim” should fit without problems, although in 2023 they are no longer so relevant. If you are an adherent of installing TVs on the wall, like me, then for this model you will need a bracket with VESA standard 300 to 200.With the 58PUS8505 / 60 leg it weighs 21 kg, and without it – 17.9 kg.
In terms of dimensions, this model has a fairly common depth for LED panels. The depth of the TV itself is 82mm, and with a stand that bulges out at the back and front of the screen, it expands to 253mm.
The back wall of the TV is made of matte black plastic. On the sides and on top are the LEDs for the Ambilight from Philips. On the right side, the manufacturer has placed a connector for connecting the power cable, and on the left side, all other connectors and slots. Some of them are directed downward, while the other part is accessible to the side connection.
The TV received 4 HDMI version 2.0 with ARC audio return channel (3 downward and 1 sideways). There are also two USB ports – one 2.0 pointing downward for connecting a mouse / keyboard, and the other 3.0 is on the side for connecting external drives. In addition, the RJ-45 connector is directed downward to connect the wired Internet, and external acoustics of the digital optical connector can be connected in the neighborhood. To connect the terrestrial, an RF port is installed below, and next to it is an F type connector for satellite TV. Traditionally, the manufacturer installed the CI + slot for connecting CAM modules on the side. A 3.5 headphone port and SERV-U for service are also accessible from the side.
Of the wireless connections, the 58PUS8505 / 60 is equipped with WI-Fi 5 and Bluetooth version 4.2.
SCREEN, TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS, SOFT
The TV uses a 10-bit MVA matrix with 4K resolution (3840 by 2160 pixels) and a maximum refresh rate of 60 Hz. Backlight – Direct LED, the advantages of which are uniformity of light, high brightness and lack of glare. However, the price for this comes from the thickness of the case and high power consumption. The screen has a brightness of 400 nits and a contrast ratio of 1600: 1. For high dynamic range content, the 58PUS8505 / 60 has support for HDR10, HDR10 +, HLG, and premium Dolby Vision.
The heart of the model is the P5 Perfect Picture processor, which the manufacturer has been using in its TVs since 2018. The work of this processor is carried out in several directions: suppression of artifacts and noise due to image compression, increasing the clarity when scaling (upscaling), smoothing the picture in dynamic scenes, working with a color palette and an extended color range.
The TV uses Android TV version 9 Pie as the operating system. Like all solutions on Android, there is support for Chromecast and Google’s voice assistant, without which content search would be a sheer nightmare for lack of a keyboard.
To install applications from the Play Market and the branded “Philips TV Collection”, the TV provides storage for 16 gigabytes. Popular western and domestic services are supported, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube and Spotify, Okko, Kinopoisk HD, Yandex Music, ivi, as well as adult platforms like Brazzers and Playboy. Of the most useful features, it is also worth noting the function of recording video to a connected hard drive, which is available only for digital TV broadcasting.
REMOTE CONTROLLER
Although the TV has Bluetooth support, the remote comes with an infrared sensor. In 2023, this looks rather strange when there are more budget models from other manufacturers with similar control devices.
The remote is quite long, as Philips decided to place on it a traditional digital block, playback and recording control buttons, and a standard D-pad with a confirmation button in the middle. Above, by tradition, there is a power button, and next to it is a microphone hole for communication with a voice assistant, which is activated by means of a special key just below. Also nearby are buttons for quick access to YouTube, Netflix, the Philips TV Collection app store and TV channels. The TV can even be controlled via a smart speaker.
SOUND
To output sound, this TV uses fairly standard equipment in the form of two full-range speakers of 10 W each at the bottom of the screen. There is support for Dolby Atmos surround sound, as well as a 5-band equalizer, which Philips is one of the few to add to their TVs. There is also support for Clear Dialogue technology to improve the sound of speech in TV programs, and an auto volume control function to equalize the volume. The speakers sound good enough, although not the level of the external full-fledged acoustics, and we failed to check the maximum volume, because it was too loud for colleagues in the office.
AMBILIGHT
The main feature of Philips TVs for many years has been the unique Ambilight technology. Smart LEDs around the perimeter project colors from the screen to the wall in real time and enhance the effect of the displayed content. There are several modes to choose from in the settings. The first adjusts the glow to the video sequence displayed on the screen, and the other burns in time with the sound. In addition, Ambilight can be used to light up your living room thanks to a special mode that works even when the TV is switched off.
By the way, patriots of their countries can also set the backlight to display the glow in the form of the flag of the country, of which there are as many as 94 to choose from. In addition, this LED system can be synchronized with the Hue family of smart lighting solutions from Philips.
RESULTS
Philips 58PUS8505 / 60 is a good TV with a large diagonal, the best operating system, all the most popular standards for an extended range of colors and pleasant backlighting to boot. It is quite enough for watching movies, YouTube videos and TV programs. However, the outdated remote is frustrating, and the 60 Hz sweep frequency in 2023 will already be too small if you are a user of modern consoles or PCs with fresh cards from AMD and Nvidia. For this money, you can find completely new models with support for 4K / 120 Hz, albeit a little smaller.
