Revenue Growth and Record PS5 Sales – Sony Shares Results in First Quarter Financial Report

Sony has released financial statements for the first quarter of 2023 ended June 30. In just the last three months, the company managed to ship 2.3 million PlayStation 5 and 500 thousand PlayStation 4. PS4 shipments decreased by 1.4 million compared to the same period last year.

In total, as of July 30, Sony had sold 10.1 million PS5s and 116.5 million PS4s.

The gaming division’s revenue grew 6.1% to $ 5.62 billion in monetary terms. This is a record for any gaming division and the highest in the first quarter in PlayStation history.

At the same time, there was a decrease in operating profit by 43.6%, which amounted to $ 761 million in the first quarter of this year.

Other data:

  • 46.3 million PlayStation Plus subscribers – 1.3 million more than last year;
  • 63.6 million PS5 and PS4 software sold, down 27.8 million from last year;
  • 10.5 million Sony exclusives sold – 8.2 million fewer than last year;
  • 71% of software sales came from digital game downloads, up from 74% a year ago.
  • 104 million monthly active users – a decrease from 109 million last year.

Sony previously announced that the PlayStation 5 was the fastest selling console in the brand’s history.
