Remember the Spider-Man tech demo for the PlayStation 5? It turns out she ran on a low speed devkit

Perhaps you remember Sony’s first presentation of the next-generation console? Then the system did not yet have an official name, but was engaged in its demonstration Brand Church personally. To show the superiority of the coming system over Playstation 4 pro, the leading architect of the platform launched a technical demo on it Marvel’s spider-man.

The exclusive PS4 includes the fast-travel function, with which the engineer decided to show the full power of the SSD. On the standard console, moving the hero around the city took 15 seconds, and on the devkit – only 0.8 seconds.

Zerni noted that the company relies on the use of high-speed downloads in new games and spoke about the opening prospects. He cited as an example the camera following the Spider – in the original, it cannot move faster, since it is tied to receiving data from the hard drive. On devkita, the perspective changes, as if the camera is mounted on a fighter.

The engineer said that the developers are only mastering the opportunities, but it is now clear that the SSD will open a new era for gaming.

A year after the presentation, interesting details were revealed. One Reddit forum user noted that the Wired article mentions an early, low-speed version of devkit. Then no one paid any attention to this, but a month after publishing on Twitter, a video leaked on which Zerni launches Marvel’s Spider-Man. You can see it below:

And here is her description from Wired:

“Spidey is standing in a small square. Zerni presses a button on the controller, opening the screen for quick movement. When Spydi appears at a completely different point in Manhattan, 15 seconds elapse. Zerni then does the same on the next-generation devkit connected to another TV (devkit, an early “low-speed” version of the console enclosed in a large silver tower without visual distinguishing features). The travel time, which totaled earlier than 15 seconds, is now less than one, or rather 0.8 seconds. ”

It follows that the final version of the PlayStation 5 will be even faster and will be able to download the open world of Insomniac Games with stunning speed.

Sony’s new console is expected to go on sale in late 2023. In early April, the company showed DualSense is the new wireless controller for the PlayStation 5.
