Recent Windows 10 update “breaks” Steam and Discord launch – review

Cumulative update for Windows 10 released by corporation Microsoft in June 2023, already caused a number of problems. These are printer malfunctions and other errors. But, as it turned out, it also “broke” the launch of applications for some users. When you try to run, for example, Steam or Discord, the system generated an error.

The failure was caused by invalid IFEO (Image File Execution Options) entries. It is assumed that they appeared after the installation of patches KB4560960 for Windows 10 (1909) and KB4557957 for version 2004.

It’s funny, but at the same time, an Avast antivirus update was released, which just as well disrupted IFEO. Security software developers have already released a patch for this, it is recommended to install it as soon as possible.

In the case of Windows 10, you can only delete the KB4560960 and KB4557957 updates to restore functionality. Editing the registry may also help.
Here’s the thing to do:

  • Open registry editor with regedit using Windows + R
  • Select the branch Computer HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion Image File Execution folder
  • Rename application folders that do not start. For example, together “Chrome.exe” you need to write “BackupChrome.exe”.
  • Restart the system.

After that, the problem should be solved.
