The novel “The Invisible Man” was written by Herbert Wells back in 1897 and during this time he was repeatedly filmed. Another variation on this subject was conceived by the producers Universalwhen in 2016 they planned the “Dark Universe” and even signed for the lead role of Johnny Depp. However, after several unsuccessful films, the general cinema universe was abandoned. The Invisible Man project was not closed, but handed over Jason bloom and his company Blumhouse productionsspecializing in inexpensive horror movies. Filming led by Lee Wannell – screenwriterSaws“And director”Upgrade”, And assigned to the main role Elizabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Mad Men”). In order to understand how successful the paradigm shift was, we went to the pre-premiere show.
New “Invisible Man”Does not overlap much with the original and relies only on the very idea from Wells’s work. Everything happens around these days, where Adrian Griffin is a brilliant scientist working in the field of optics. He lives with Cecilia Cass, the main character of the picture, who escapes from their house with the help of her sister and hides from Griffin with a friend for two weeks. The girl is sure that he will track her down, so she is very scared and afraid to leave the house. She talks about how Adrian terrorized her, controlled all actions and even thoughts. If he didn’t like something, he brutally beat and raped the heroine.
Starring Elizabeth Moss very convincingly wins off panic and paranoia, and later other elements of psychosis are added to this sad “bouquet”.
One day, Cecilia learns that Griffin decided to die and left her a big inheritance. Her stress slowly recedes, and life seems to have begun to improve. At this moment, the heroine is revealed from the other side. She is looking for a new job, helping her friend’s daughter enter a prestigious university, but suddenly strange things begin to happen to her. Again, it seems to her that someone is following her, but no one believes her. The main question that arises for the viewer in the first half of the film is: “Has she lost her mind? Or is she really haunted by an invisible man whose presence she alone notices? ”
The intrigue lasts a very long time, and even when everything becomes more apparent, doubts in one direction or another can arise periodically.
The plot is unusually suited to the classics, the film is able to maintain audience interest until the very end. In some situations, there are so-called “movie conventions” that can annoy meticulous lovers of realism, but they are not the most obvious.
There is not much action, but it looks interesting and inventive. Elizabeth Moss moves as if her someone really is invisible holding her hair and dragging on the floor.
Other positive aspects include the excellent work of the operator. The film has long plans and interesting perspectives. In the most stressful moments, the camera moves slowly and without mounting glues flies around the heroine, plunging into the atmosphere of quiet panic and horror that she is experiencing. There is usually no music in these episodes, and suspicious sounds that only add to the tension interrupt the terrible silence.
Sometimes the surroundings are emphasized by specific and disturbing music, but before the climax, when the degree of tension is incredibly high, the authors use minimalistic audio accompaniment.
At the same time, the filmmakers do not shun trivial tricks, such as “screamers” (sharp and unexpected actions with loud sounds). And in the cinema there was an increased volume, and at such moments the sound of the film and the screams of the girls sitting next to it hit hard on the ears. Although these moments seemed very predictable to me, the audience reacted to them every time.
“Invisible Man“- This is a good psychological thriller with elements of horror and detective story. The contrasting sound design along with the skillful play of the actors well convey the emotional suffering of the main character, and interesting camera decisions make them more convincing. If you are a fan of the genre or tired of big-budget blockbusters, then you can try the new creation of Lee Wonnel and Jason Bloom. However, you should not wait for any revelations – this is just a well-shot movie at a time.
