The creators of Predator are seeking to take advantage of the termination clause of copyright law, which allows creators to revoke the rights to their works from their current owners after a certain period of time (usually after 35 years).
According to the plaintiffs, 20th Century Studios could dispose of the rights to the “Predator” until April 17 this year. They filed a notice back in 2016 and have not heard any objections since then. However, in early 2023, counsel for the defendants unexpectedly contacted the authors’ side, challenging the termination notice as premature because the 1986 grant for the Predator scenario falls under a special window for delayed completion book grants.
The Thomas brothers did not agree with this and are now looking for declarative help. In turn, 20th Century Studios has filed a counterclaim in the hope of preserving the rights to the franchise and claims that the intentions of the authors do not comply with legal requirements and are invalid from the point of view of the law.…
The legal war began months after reports surfaced last November that 20th Century Studios had hired a director for “Cloverfield 10” Dan Trachtenberg for staging the fifth part of “Predator”. The script for the new film is being written by the co-author of the series “Kingdom”, “Jack Ryan” and “Treadstone” Patrick Eison, but due to new circumstances, the production of the tape may now be postponed.
