Persona 4 Golden on PC. Why did the port of the old Japanese RPG go on top of Steam sales? – review addiction

We understand why Persona 4 Golden is so good and why it is interesting to pass it even now.

Output Persona 4 golden on the PC was a real surprise. On June 13th, the game just appeared in Steam – without any announcements or pre-orders. But the audience enthusiastically accepted it: Persona 4 Golden made its debut in fourth place in the platform’s sales top, while almost thirty thousand people sat down to play it. Impressive numbers for the genre – and even more so for the port of the old console game, which came out without noise and hype.

The reputation of the original worked better than any advertisement: it was simply impossible to pass the game, which critics and players praised in unison. And, more importantly, Persona 4 Golden over the years has not lost its relevance. It drags on more often than many new products, and the plot makes you not only worry about the fate of the heroes, but also think about many modern problems.

Person come!

At all, Persona – This is not just another famous Japanese role-playing series. Even within the framework of this extravagant genre, she always stood out due to psychologism and topical subjects. In 1996 Atlus decided to diversify the plots and mechanics Shin Megami Tenseireplacing the post-apocalyptic surroundings with a modern one. Real gods and demons became the incarnations of the collective unconscious, and the chosen heroes became simple schoolchildren who suddenly faced a paranormal scourge. So was born Revelations: persona, which marked the beginning of this series.

The terms from analytical psychology are used here not just for a red word: “Persona” seriously refers to archetypes, shadows and other concepts created by Carl Gustav Jung. The characters in the series have to deal not only with external enemies, but also with their own complexes, injuries and mistakes of the past. Moreover, not alone, but with the help of other people – so the characters also learn to understand and accept each other.

The series was ahead of its time: using games as a method of therapy or a way to make social commentary on the topic of growing up has become fashionable only in the last five years. “Person” is not shy about talking about the important thing for twenty-four years, and for this she is especially loved. In addition, she still has no worthy competitors in this field. They tried to become created by immigrants from Atlus Caligula effectbut, alas, with a good idea, the performance was disappointing.
In the opening video Persona 3 Portable the number of terms per second of screen time just rolls over

But, despite the people’s love, the franchise was in no hurry to leave their own Playstation (But it was noted on all Sony consoles from PS1 to PS4, and looked at PSP with Vita). The only port on the PC before that was only the very first Persona back in 1999. So it is not surprising that the previously unreached audience rushed to join the legend. After all, this is not another vanilla story about how brave knights and pretty sorceresses save the world from disaster, but something really unusual.

Mom, I’m on TV

In the center of events of the Persona 4 Golden is a student who had to temporarily move from the capital to the quiet provincial town of Inaba: the guy’s parents went on a business trip abroad, and his son was sent to stay with his uncle. However, life on the periphery is not as boring as the hero expected. Soon after his arrival in Inaba, a terrible incident occurs: the corpse of a scandalous journalist wrapped in wires is found on the antenna of one of the houses. A few days later, the girl who discovered the body overtakes the same fate – the police knocked down, but could not find a single clue.

Life in the province seems boring and bland. But when trouble comes, you begin to remember silent evenings behind a TV with nostalgia

The protagonist and his newfound friends decide to conduct their own investigation. And very unusual: the guys discover the ability to go through the TV screen and get into a surreal world inhabited by monsters. In addition, according to one unexpectedly friendly resident of this world, someone sends people there to be torn to pieces by monsters. But who? How? What for? What kind of world is this, and how is it connected with reality? Is it possible to close the road there once and for all in order to avoid new tragedies? The answers to all these questions are to be found out by the heroes.

Murder Investigation – Not for the Faint of Heart

false mirror

At first glance, we see an ordinary mystical detective story for teenagers. But the devil, as usual, lies in the details – more precisely, in the subtext of history. The world with monsters on the other side of the television screen does not look so metaphorical for nothing: it was created by the collective unconscious, which means it is filled with our fears and suppressed emotions. And there are also Shadows – the physical embodiment of qualities that we do not want to notice in ourselves and deny in every way. It is with them that the heroes have to fight to advance further in the investigation … and accept themselves, no matter how vile this real “I” is.

Truth can hurt, but it’s better to accept it than to run away from yourself forever

And no, complexes of adolescents from the Japanese hinterland of twelve years ago (originally Persona 4 went to Playstation 2 in 2008, and its augmented version of Golden – already in 2012 on Playstation vita) do not seem modern western player alien and far-fetched. Our ideas about ourselves, about what is right and wrong, are formed under the influence of attitudes imposed by society. But they do not change so quickly and do not vary so much from country to country. The game shows how destructive gender stereotypes can be, self-humiliation and idealization of others, loss of individuality behind masks that are convenient for society … It would be clearer to talk about the problems of specific heroes, but Atlus asks to refrain from spoilers, and we ourselves do not want to spoil the trip to Inaba to those who have not been there yet.

At the same time, Persona 4 Golden does not bore with excessive cleverness or moralization. Her characters not only delve into themselves and talk about the high – they live a full life with a bunch of small events like trips to the sea or unsuccessful culinary experiments. And otherworldly adventures take up a lot of time: monsters themselves won’t defeat themselves!

Gold does not rust

Clearly defining the Persona 4 genre is not so easy: we have a hybrid of role-playing and visual novels. The gameplay in the other world is a classic dungeon simulator with turn-based battles and procedurally generated mazes. Useful little things are hidden in the back streets, monsters roam the corridors, and at the end there is a huge and dangerous boss – in a word, a paradise for old-school lovers.

Monsters, like heroes, have weaknesses and immunity to various types of attacks. Fortunately, you don’t need to keep them in your head: once you find the vulnerability or immunity, the system will show them. And the navigator friend will helpfully (and obsessively) begin to suggest what is best done

As in any classic role-playing game, the heroes here can be pumped, equipped with various weapons and armor. That’s just not everyone can choose skills. Friends of the protagonist are able to develop in only one direction: one heals, the other blows off the wind, the third fries with fire, etc. – it all depends on the specifics of their characters and unique persons. Only the main character can change his characters at will, receiving them as a reward after the battle or even creating new ones. Moreover, they also grow in level and gain new skills, like some kind of metaphysical Pokemon.

You can make friends not only with people, but also with a severe fox!

But it’s impossible to reveal the full potential of people without social connections – the very “dating simulator” that appeared in Persona 3 and became an integral part of the series. Get the location of colleagues and other friends, choosing the right answers in the dialogs, and you can create stronger people. Develop your social skills like courage and perseverance, and you can expand your circle of acquaintances, and at the same time learn more about the world and characters. It sounds simple, but it is communication that brings diversity to the game and accelerates its pace. After all, the protagonist has so many friends, hobbies and side jobs, and so little time in days! Everything is like in real life.

Let’s start from the middle

Some players worry about whether to begin acquaintance with the series with the fourth part – and in vain. As with Final fantasy, the plot games of the series are connected with each other only by a handful of barely noticeable references, so anyone who has not played in the previous parts will lose nothing.

For the release on PC Atlus (this is the rare case when the developer himself is engaged in the port, and does not attract a third-party company), he painted portraits in high resolution, and brought the textures to a divine form. The age of the game is still noticeable, especially in the background, but it looks decent. It was hardly worth the wait, because this is exactly the port with PS Vita, and not a remaster

Gameplay of course Persona 5 (and even more so Persona 5 royal) much richer in different chips and mini-games, and the palaces there with their well-thought-out architecture and puzzles are more interesting to go through than randomly generated mazes. And the last part of the series looks much more modern. But the difference between the projects is not so great as to shun the fourth part as some kind of archaism.

Unlike the third and fifth parts, Persona 4 refers primarily to Japanese mythology, so for the Western player the references will not be so obvious. But this is a great reason to broaden your horizons and learn about Izanami and Izanagi, Konohanasakuya, Tomoe Godzen and other gods and heroes of the Land of the Rising Sun

The debate about which “Person” is the best plot and the most serious topic has not subsided among fans so far. Most respected Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Persona 2: Eternal Punishmentbut we’ll be honest: now the most seasoned fans of the series and genre will only take up games with the first PlayStation.

Well, choosing the best story among the games of the last trilogy is like arguing about which color is more beautiful. It’s a matter of taste. Gothic pathos and reflections on the frailty of being in Persona 3 will turn out to be closer to one, to another – a call to rebel against a vicious system and gain inner freedom in Persona 5, to the third – searches for truth and introspection in Persona 4. There are no passing games here: each is good and interesting to your own. And the fourth part, perhaps, will even turn out to be the most vital and topical in our era of gender criticism and the fight against stereotypes.

Atlus clearly believes that it’s simply impossible to love one “Person” and ignore the rest, so fans are pleased with crossovers like the role-playing series Persona q and fighting game Persona 4 arena

The success of Persona 4 Golden on PC is a vivid example of the fact that originality will always be in price, and word of mouth works better than any advertisement. An excellent game from the original series has found new fans and allowed the old to nostalgic for the big screen – and this is good news.

As well as the gradual development of a new platform, which was engaged in Atlus. I hope that success Catherine classic and Persona 4 Golden will inspire developers to port other time-tested classics. And there you can dream about new products or remasters.
