Outriders creators explained the need for 2-second absurd videos

After the release of the demo Outriders many are discussing the absurd number of cutscenes – during the prologue, cutscenes take almost more time than any gameplay.

Over time, the gameplay still becomes more, but some absurd videos remain. Especially on the network, a video was scattered where the hero jumps over a small abyss – for this, an 8-second cutscene is turned on.

“I’m not sure if I needed a cutscene for that, Outriders.” – Editor of Eurogamer.

The developers have learned to mask downloads very well for a long time, making the transitions between locations look much more organic than a similar video. Outriders took a different path.

According to the developers of Outriders, the key reason for such transitions between locations is co-op. Since the connection takes place directly to the host player, and on dedicated servers, you cannot allow people from the squad to run around different locations.

During testing, it became clear that the simple start of the download disorientates the players, so the developers decided to add rather absurd videos during the transition to a new location, so that users better understand where they are going.

Suppose I start moving to a new location, but my friend is now in a different part of the level. At this moment, he teleports with me – and such a video will help him better understand what is happening.

It may not work exactly the way we intended it now.

“.

An alternative solution would be to automatically break the squad so that people can be in different locations, but the developers wanted to avoid this.

I prefer to see a 2 second animation of doors opening, but still playing with my friends, than a lobby breakup. We made this decision. We understand that it is not perfect“.

The developers will try to make such transitions less annoying, but they are unlikely to be able to fundamentally change them. However, as Eurogamer notes, when going alone, such flaws are striking.

IN People can fly insist that most of these difficulties are at the beginning of the game – in the middle and towards the end, they cope with it more elegantly.

Outriders releases April 1 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One and PC. Progress from the demo can be carried over to the full release.
