So, Revali has two combat modes at once, one – when he is on the ground, and the second – when he hovers above the surface. After taking off, this fighter becomes very mobile and almost inaccessible for simple mobs, and at the same time he can actively attack enemies from the air. Link should be noted separately. He is not tied to a specific weapon, like other characters, and he is able to equally well use both a sword and a shield, and various spears, clubs and other weapons. By the way, Link is the only hero in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity who is allowed to change his appearance. This does not affect anything, but as you progress through you will unlock various costumes that are well known to everyone who went through Breath of the Wild.
The interesting nuances of the combat system do not end there. Each character has special runes at their disposal, especially effective against powerful enemies, which, in addition to the life scale, also have an armor indicator.
Such opponents sometimes use powerful attacks, interrupted only by a specific rune. For example, if you timely magnetize an enemy hammer, then it will fly back into the enemy, and if you put up an ice wall while he is trying to ram you with a running start, then the monster will burrow into it.
If everything is done on time, opponents will be knocked down, and your hits will break their armor. After completely breaking through the enemy’s defense, the hero can inflict a powerful and spectacular super strike, which in most cases destroys any mini-boss the first time. Thus, the game pushes to study the behavior of opponents and correctly counterattack them with the necessary element.
In addition to runes, fighters also have items at their disposal that allow them to set fire, freeze or electrify a certain area. While there is no physics as elaborate as in Breath of the Wild, the interaction of the elements still works great. Frozen enemies are better set on fire, and wet ones receive powerful lightning damage. All this together makes the gameplay more varied and gives the combat system a certain depth.
After completing the first tasks, the player is transferred to the global map. On it, in addition to the main story missions, there are also a large number of secondary tasks and assignments that pump characters and open up various opportunities.
As you progress through the game in battles, your heroes will receive various items, including ingredients for cooking. There are special places on the map where you can cook dishes that give the fighters bonuses before new battles.
